1. Which author created the character Maggie Tulliver?

Answer: George Eliot

Maggie Tulliver is the main character in George Eliot's novel 'The Mill on the Floss'. George Eliot was a pen name for Mary Anne Evans who was born in 1819 in Warwickshire England. She took a pen name because it was not considered respectable for a woman to be a writer.
2. James Herriot was an animal doctor. Which of the four words below is correctly spelt?

Answer: Veterinary

James Herriot (Alfred Wight) wrote amusing books about his experiences as a Yorkshire vet from 1930s. Two movies and a long running television show were made based on the books.
3. Where in Europe could you see Barbary macaques living wild?

Answer: Gibraltar

Barbary macaques have been in Gibraltar for hundreds of years and it is uncertain how they first got there. They are the major tourist attraction of the area and will often climb on people. They have learned to undo zips on bags and pick pockets for food and it is now against the law to deliberately feed them.
4. Which island was awarded the George Cross by King George VI after World War II?

Answer: Malta

The George Cross was awarded to Malta for their gallantry whist they were under siege from Germany early in World War II. They were very heavily bombed and many towns and villages were completely destroyed. There was very little food available, and the people had to live in shelters for long periods.
5. What is unusual about the reproduction process of the seahorse?

Answer: The male carries the young

The female lays up to 1,500 eggs directly into a pouch on the male's body. He then carries them for between nine and forty five days after which they emerge as fully formed tiny seahorses. The seahorse is named for its resemblance to the head and neck shape of a horse.
6. In which musical would you hear the songs 'Mr Cellophane' and 'When You're Good to Mama'?

Answer: Chicago

'Mr Cellophane' is a poignant song sung by the character Amos Hart, husband of the main character Roxy. He is never noticed and always disregarded. 'When You're Good to Mama' is sung by the chief prison wardress who is always interested in making as much money out of the prisoners as she can.
7. Who invented the seed drill and the horse drawn hoe?

Answer: Jethro Tull

These were very important inventions because they reduced the need for workers just as the industrial revolution was beginning and there were less people available to work on the land. It also increased the yield from the crops and helped to keep people fed.
8. Where in the world would you find a building called the Atomium?

Answer: Brussels Belgium

This building was erected for the 1958 World Fair in Brussels. It is made up of nine stainless steel clad spheres of eighteen metres diameter. They are connected to form the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal. It was designed by engineer Andre Waterkeyn and architects Andre and Jean Polak, and is today used as a museum.
9. What is a gooseberry fool?

Answer: A dessert with yoghurt or custard

This is a delicious dessert. The gooseberries are cooked with sugar and then mashed down into a pulp, or whizzed in a food processor. This is thoroughly chilled then folded into thick Greek yogurt (0r, traditionally, custard) spooned into glasses then chilled again. Before it is served it can be decorated with spare gooseberries or flaked nuts.

Answer: The African Queen

Katharine Hepburn plays Rose, a rather proper missionary who is left alone as her brother has died. Humphrey Bogart is Charlie Allnut, a cockney boatman, and engineer and skipper of the boat called African Queen. They start off down the river together and fall in love. The quote is what she says to him as he wakes after their first night together.
