Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which bird would you find on a golf course after you had hit a hole in one at a par four?

Answer: Albatross

Three under par is quite a rare feat, so it's appropriate that this is named after quite a rare bird. Nick Watney managed to hit a spectacular albatross at the US Open in 2012, on the par five 17th hole at Olympic Club, San Francisco and Paul Lawrie managed it at the British Open in 2009, when he also took just two strokes to master a par five hole. Albatross are found mainly around Antarctica, Australia, South Africa and South America and if you're anything like me, you have read this shouting the word albatross each time, thanks to the wonderful Monty Python sketch.
2. Which big cat won the 24 hours of Le Mans and 24 hours of Daytona endurance races in 1988 and 1990?

Answer: Jaguar

Jaguar won 24 hours of Le Mans in 1988, with Jan Lammers, Johnny Dumfries and Andy Wallace driving, breaking the stranglehold that Porsche had held on the event since 1981. They repeated the feat in 1990, this time with John Neilsen, Prince Cobb and Martin Brundle.

It was a similar story at 24 hours of Daytona, where Porsche had won every year since 1977, before the Jaguar team of Raul Boesel, Martin Brundle, John Neilsen and Jan Lammers triumphed in 1988. Lammers was also a driver for the 1990 victory alongside Davy Jones and Andy Wallace. Jaguars are found in both North and South America and although they resemble a leopard, are larger and more muscular.
3. Which mammal could be seen on a baseball diamond and a cricket pitch?

Answer: Bat

Cricket bats have a maximum permitted length of 38 inches (965 mm) and are made of willow. Baseball bats are allowed to be 42 inches (1067 mm) long and are usually made from ash, although hickory, maple and bamboo have also been used. There are over 1,200 species of bat and they are the only mammal capable of true flight.

Although long associated with vampires and death, bats can be hugely beneficial to humans, eating an incredible amount of insects each day, thereby reducing the need for pesticides and also producing a lot of guano (bat dung) which is an efficient and plentiful crop fertiliser.
4. British auto manufacturer AC Cars and American race driver Carroll Shelby teamed up in 1961 to produce which rival to the Chevrolet Corvette?

Answer: Cobra

The AC Cobra, also known as the Shelby Cobra, went on sale in 1962, using a Ford 4.3 litre V8 engine. By 1965, this had been upgraded to a 7.0 litre V8, also supplied by Ford in the Cobra 427, which produced 427 brake horse power and a top speed of 164 mph (264 km/h).

The King Cobra is the world's longest venomous snake and is found in Asia, particularly India, where it is the national reptile.
5. What sort of animal was Kim Philby, or any other employee who infiltrates a country's security defences?

Answer: Mole

Whereas a spy just spies, the term mole is used to describe a spy who manages to establish cover long before commencing espionage activities. Philby was part of the "Cambridge Five" spy ring in the UK in the 1960s who were working for the Soviet Union, alongside Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt and John Cairncross. Moles, with their velvet fur, are found across Europe, North America and Asia and are a huge pest to farmers with their distinctive molehills killing pasture and ruining crop roots.
6. Which amphibian was Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999 and author of the 2001 book, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them"?

Answer: Newt

The Newts in question are Newt Gingrich, a member of the Republican Party who was also a presidential candidate in 2012 until he withdrew from the campaign and publicly endorsed Mitt Romney, and Newt Scamander, magizoologist, retired minister from the Ministry of Magic and pen name of "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling, brilliantly played by Eddie Redmayne in the 2016 movie "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them". Newts are found in waterways throughout North America, Europe, and Asia and depending on the species, may spend the majority of their time in the water or live on land, returning to the water only to breed.

They are amazing creatures, capable of regenerating lost body parts, such as legs, jaws, eyes and even heart and spinal cord.
7. Which mollusc should one carry to ensure hassle free movement around the UK capital?

Answer: Oyster

The oyster card is a prepaid electronic ticket valid on public transport in London and can be used on the London Underground, London Buses, the Docklands Light Railway, London Overground rail network, Tramlink, river boat services, and most National Rail services.

The oyster that I like best though is one steamed over a water and wine mixture. Sadly, I've never found a pearl yet, but I'll keep eating them until I do.
8. Which bird can be found in kid's lunchboxes at schoolyards across the UK?

Answer: Penguin

A penguin is an individually wrapped, chocolate covered biscuit, with chocolate cream inside, made by McVities. They have been around since 1932 and have been made in a number of different flavours including mint, toffee and orange. Although penguins are associated with Antarctica, they also live in Australia and New Zealand as well as Angola and Namibia in Africa and Argentina and Chile in South America.
9. Who did model Heidi Klum marry in 2005?

Answer: Seal

Seal, real name Henry Olusegun Adeola Samuel, is a British singer, probably most famous for his 1994 hit "Kiss From A Rose", which went to number one in Australia, USA and UK as well as hitting the top ten in the charts of many other countries. Seal and Klum were married from 2005 to 2014, during which time they had three children together and Seal adopted Klum's daughter by Benetton Formula One team boss Flavio Briatore.

Although the majority of seals are found in the Antarctic area, there are several species that live in warmer climes. Seals live in huge colonies and there are an estimated 40,000 Common Seals just in UK coastal waters.
10. Which cat won the U.S. Open golf tournament in 2000, 2002 and 2008 and starred in the 2016 Bollywood movie "Baaghi"?

Answer: Tiger

Two Tigers in one question. The first was Tiger Woods (real name Eldrick), who in addition to the three U.S. Open wins mentioned, also won the British Open three times, the PGA Championship three times and The Masters three times between 2000 and 2008.

The other Tiger is Tiger Shroff (real name Jai) who was nominated for a "Filmfare Award" as best male actor in 2014 for his movie debut in "Heropanti" before going on to star in "Baaghi" and the sequel "Baaghi 2" in 2018. Although tigers once roamed much of Eurasia, their habitat has been cut at an alarming rate and they are now only found in the far east of Siberia and in pockets on the Indian sub-continent.
