Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you hear a person being described as being 'a bit rum', what are they?

Answer: They are a bit odd

To describe someone or something as being 'a bit rum' is to imply that they are odd or strange in some way. The origins of the expression are not clear. Some have linked it to the rum served to British sailors but this attribution has not been clearly established.
2. If you were doing the rumba, what would you be doing?

Answer: Dancing

The dance, the rumba, originated in Cuba. The word rumba itself comes from the Spanish for party. There are two main versions of the rumba, the original Cuban rumba and ballroom rumba. For those of you who are fans of the movie 'Strictly Ballroom' you will remember some classic ballroom rumba scenes.
3. Which country had a Rum Rebellion in 1808?

Answer: Australia

The Rum Rebellion occurred on 26 January 1808 and was the only successful overthrow of a government in Australia's history. The unlucky governor of the day was William Bligh of 'Mutiny on the Bounty' fame. The catalyst for the rebellion was Bligh's outlawing the use of rum for bartering.

The Rebellion lasted until 1 January 1810 when Lachlan Macquarie arrived to be installed as the new Governor of Australia.
4. Rum Jungle in the Northern Territory of Australia apparently got its name in the 1870s from a bullock dray laden with rum getting bogged in the area. The drivers filled in their time until being rescued by drinking the cargo. Rum Jungle is today associated with the mining of what ore?

Answer: Uranium

Ore deposits in the area were originally found in the 1860s but the explorer could not identify what the mineral was. The deposits were rediscovered in 1949 and became Australia's first major uranium mine.
5. The distilled form of rum is believed to have originated in which part of the world?

Answer: Caribbean

The Caribbean was a major producer of sugar cane in the 17th century. It is believed that slaves discovered that the molasses, a by-product of sugar refining, could be distilled into alcohol.
6. If someone invited you over for a night of gin rummy, what would you expect to be doing?

Answer: Playing cards

Gin rummy was invented in 1909 by the father/son team of Elwood and Graham Baker. The game has its origins in the game of gin which itself is derived from whiskey poker. Like many card games the key objective is to score the most points and hence win the game.
7. One of Australia's most heavily advertised brand of rum is 'Bundaberg'. What is the animal that is used in its advertising campaigns?

Answer: Polar Bear

The polar bear, which is an odd choice for an Australian product given its far from Arctic climate, was introduced in 1961. Apparently the polar bear logo was selected to suggest that the rum could warm you in the coldest weather.
8. The British Navy served a daily issue of rum to its sailors until the practice was abolished in 1970. What was the individual serving of rum known as?

Answer: A tot of rum

The practice of serving a daily tot of rum commenced in the 1650s after the British captured Jamaica; the primary source of rum at that time. Prior to this, the British Navy served brandy to its sailors.
9. What is rum distilled from?

Answer: Molasses

Rum is distilled from the by-product of the sugar refining process; molasses. Rum originally came from the Caribbean, which was a major producer of sugar from the 17th century onwards. The region is still one of the world's major rum producing areas.
10. Which 'rum' fairy tale character' spun straw into gold?

Answer: Rumpelstiltskin

A miller lies to a king that his daughter can spin straw into gold. Rumpelstiltskin helps her out on condition that she hands over her first born child. The impressed king marries the miller's daughter and when the first child is born, Rumpelstiltskin demands payment.

He only agrees to give up the claim if she can guess his name within three days. In the best tradition of fairy tales she guesses his name and keeps her child.
