Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. USA Which US city, located in a landlocked state, is nicknamed the "Mile High City" as it is exactly one mile above sea level?

Answer: Denver

Denver is the capital of Colorado and is situated on the High Plains, east of the Rocky Mountains. It was established in 1815 during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush and at the 2010 census, was named as the 24th most populous city in the USA. In 2016, "U.S. News & World REport" named Denver as the best place to live in the United States.

Dallas is a huge metropolis in central Texas. Dayton housed the Wright Brothers in western Ohio and Downey is the name of three small towns in California, Idaho and Iowa.
2. Western Europe Which city, located at the mouth of the River Liffey, was once a Viking settlement before becoming a principal settlement after the Norman Invasion?

Answer: Dublin

Dublin is located on the east coast of Ireland, in the province of Leinster and is bordered to the south by the Wicklow Mountains. After the 1922 Partition of Ireland, Dublin became the capital of the Irish Free State which was later renamed Ireland. The name Dublin came from the Irish words for dark and pool, and was named after the dark tidal pool found where the River Poddle enters the River Liffey.
3. South Asia Which Asian city, formerly part of the British Empire, has given its name to a type of expanding ordnance?

Answer: Dum Dum

The original expanding bullets, named after the Dum Dum Arsenal in India where they were first produced, are designed to create major traumatic damage to the target, thus causing greater incapacity and a higher risk of death. They were considered barbaric and banned from use by a number of conventions at the end of the 19th century.
Da Nang is in Vietnam. Dalian and Dezhou are in China
4. Black Sea Situated on the banks of the Dnieper river at its confluence with the Samara River is which city which was formerly known as Ekaterinoslav?

Answer: Dnipro

Until 1925 Dnipro was called Ekaterinoslav, when the name was changed to Dnipropetrovsk, after the former leader Grigory Petrovsky. In 2016 the name was changed again and the city became Dnipro. There is evidence that Dnipro is either on the site of, or once was, a fortified town as far back as the middle of the 16th century. Today, Dnipro is Ukraine's fourth largest city.
5. Africa Which city in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province, situated beside the Indian Ocean, is one of the two starting points for the famous Comrades Ultra-marathon?

Answer: Durban (South Africa)

Named after British General, Sir Benjamin D'Urban, the city is the largest in Kwa-Zulu Natal, and the third largest in South Africa, behind Johannesburg and Cape Town. One of the annual sporting highlights is the Comrades Ultramarathon, which starts in Durban and finishes in the provincial capital, Pietermaritzburg, and reverses direction the following year. It is a gruelling 89 km (55 mile) run. Race records for both men and women are in the range 5-6 hours.

Durban is the busiest port in South Africa. It is also a major tourist mecca because of the city's subtropical climate and beautiful golden beaches.

Dodoma is the capital of Tanzania, Douala is in Cameroon and Dessie is in Ethiopia.
6. The Philippines This country is an archipelago of 7107 islands with Luzon being the biggest island. Which major T city, which sounds like it should be in Mexico or at least famous for sauce making, is located on this island in the province of Albay?

Answer: Tabaco

Tabaco, a seaport of around 133 000 (2018) is a vibrant city coming out of the shadow of larger cities in the region. The seaport is the major reason the place is booming but also it is a entry point for access to the perfectly symmetrical Mayon Volcano, the most active volcano in the Philippines, which lies south of the city.
7. Former Soviet Union Cities All the following cities were behind the Soviet iron curtain before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Which one of the four, a capital of a Baltic republic, is spelled the way it was as a Soviet city before it was restored to its original spelling in 1991?

Answer: Tallin

Tallinn (double consonants are important in the native language) is the capital of tiny Estonia with about half of its population residing in the capital. It has a beautiful old town that attracts tourists from all over the world.

Tyumen is a large Russian city of over three quarters of a million, about 2500 km east of Moscow near the Kazakhstan border on the Tura river.

Tarnow is a Polish city of over 100 000 people near the Lithuanian border. It is a major rail centre and is a key east-west connection on the connections between Lviv to Krakow.

Tarsus is a small city near the Mediterranean Sea in south central Turkey. Tarsus was the capital of the province of Cilicia in the Roman Era. It was where Mark Antony and Cleopatra first met. It was also the birthplace of Paul the Apostle.
8. Caspian Sea / Mediterranean Sea Located near two major fault lines and south east of the strato-volcano Mount Damavand, which Middle Eastern city is regarded as one of the world's most polluted cities?

Answer: Tehran

Tehran is the third most populous city in the Middle East and was chosen as the capital of Iran in 1786. Due to the constant threat of earthquakes and the severe air pollution, 80% of which is caused by cars, talks about moving the capital from Tehran have been ongoing for years. Although Mount Damavand has not erupted for over 7000 years it is regarded as 'potentially active'. It is also part of the 'Volcanic Seven Summits' mountaineering challenge.

Tabriz is also in Iran. Tikrit is in neighbouring Iraq but Tirana, capital of Albania, is some distance away on the Mediterranean Sea.
9. Far East Which of the following major cities is the only one NOT found in Japan?

Answer: Taipei

Taipei (Taipei City) is the capital city of Taiwan as well as being a 'special municipality' (administrative division). Before the arrival of large numbers of Han Chinese in the early 18t century, the regional population was dominated by the Ketagalan tribes (aboriginal Taiwanese people). By the late 19th century the area was a major trading centre and regional hub.
Taiwan claimed the world's tallest building between 2004 and 2010 with Taipei 101, 1670 feet tall.
10. USA Which city in Washington state was the site of the famous collapse of what was then (1940) the world's third-longest suspension bridge?

Answer: Tacoma

The statement that a moderate wind blew down the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is actually based in truth! Still studied today in engineering, physics and mathematics classes, the collapse was caused by 'aeroelastic fluttering'. In essence, the 64 kph (40 mph) wind caused a vibration in the bridge that formed a simple harmonic motion. One side of the bridge was twisting in one direction and the other side in the opposite direction. These forces caused the bridge structure to rupture. There are a couple of great videos (easily found on the internet) that show the bridge undergoing amazing distortions before breaking.

The two longer suspension bridges at that time were also both in the USA: The Golden Gate Bridge and the George Washington Bridge.
