Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the largest US city, by population, outside of the contiguous 48 states?

Answer: Honolulu

Honolulu is the largest and most populous city in Hawaii, but is just within the top 50 in the U.S. Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska, and the second biggest US city outside of the contiguous 48 states after Honolulu. Similarly, Fairbanks is also a prominent Alaska city. Oneonta, New York, however, is in upstate Ostego County, and is home to the National Soccer Hall of Fame. (American "English" football.)
2. If you saw the movie "My Cousin Vinny", you no doubt recall the way a certain word was pronounced by Joe Pesci's lawyer character, as he repeated it for the confused judge (Fred Gwynne). If you didn't, no matter - what city do the NCAA's Utes call home?

Answer: Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City, Utah is home to the University of Utah Utes, the largest school in the Beehive state. The mascot name recalls a regional Indian tribe. Provo, also in Utah, is the site of the Brigham Young University Cougars, the largest private school in the U.S.

Colorado Springs, Colorado is the home of the proud United States Air Force Academy Falcons. The campus is worth a visit. The chapel architecture is unique. Finally, Storrs, Connecticut is actually a small town in the rural, eastern part of the state. It is home to the University of Connecticut (UConn) Huskies, well-known for their men's and women's basketball teams.
3. Garmins are neat, portable navigation devices. Garmin to driver: "Traveling southbound on I-81 out of Franklin County, Pennsylvania, hit the traditional Mason-Dixon line and proceed a half dozen miles farther". Where will this take you?

Answer: Halfway, Maryland

Halfway, Maryland is a half dozen miles out of Pennsylvania. Drive another half dozen miles to the West Virginia state line, but your trip is not whole. Drive a full dozen more miles on the 81 to Martinsburg, which is the site of a major NASCAR event, along with other races.

This drive takes you through an area of some famous Civil War battlefield sites, perhaps none more so than Antietam, Maryland, a very bloody and important place in U.S. history. If you reach Baltimore, time for Onstar. If you end up in Steubenville, just get the Garmin already.
4. This Wisconsin city is situated in the midst of five lakes, well-used by residents and visitors alike for their visual beauty, recreation and fishing (even when frozen). It has been ranked as the most desirable American city in which to live by some magazines among cities approximately its size. What city?

Answer: Madison

The five lakes are Monona, Mendota, Wingra, Waubesa and Kegonsa. It was in Monona that Otis Redding's plane tragically crashed three days after he recorded "Dock of the Bay", right in front of the state capital. The notable University of Wisconsin serves the community and offers Big Ten college sports. Asian restaurants and general diversity abound among the rolling hills.

Citizens of Green Bay, "Titletown, USA", own their beloved Packers and their city is the gateway to the beautiful Door County peninsula. Milwaukee, the largest city in the state, is home to major pro sports teams, Marquette University, and is the traditional American brewing capital. Finally, Middleton is a nice, residential suburb near Madison's lovely west side.
5. What so-called "river" in New York is actually a strait (a body of water connecting two other larger bodies of water)? It's no occident.

Answer: East River

This misnomer of a river is also the subject of a misconception that contends that you see more floating tires, bottles, bodies, etc. than water. The spruced-up, saline strait links Long Island Sound to New York Harbor and all are part of the Atlantic Ocean, geographically speaking. The Harlem River branches off the larger Hudson River and flows into the strait known as the East River between Manhattan and the Bronx. The Hudson Bay is a very large saltwater bay in northern Canada.
6. What city, on the north end of the long New Jersey shoreline, is the home of Monmouth University and also the birthplace of country singer Clint Black?

Answer: Long Branch

The Monmouth Hawks compete at the NCAA Division 1 level, 1-AA in football. Clint Black's sounds aren't very "Jersey", but have made him a country star. Freehold is the boyhood home of Jersey's favorite son, Bruce Springsteen, and is just inland from the shore. Springsteen later established himself musically in shore resort towns like Asbury Park amidst the honkytonks and beach boardwalks. Red Bank is the birthplace of jazz legend Count Basie.

Ironically enough, Jersey Shore is a small enclave in central Pennsylvania near Williamsport.
7. Ok, where is the National Cowboy Hall of Fame?

Answer: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

The National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum is in the largest city in the state. The Hall has featured a chuck wagon gathering and children's cowboy festival on Memorial Day Weekend. Cheyenne has a cowboy history, too, as does the state of Wyoming. Bakersfield, north of Los Angeles, has a rich history of country music and a "cowboy" feel as well.

If you answered Beverly Hills someone must have mispronounced "Rodeo Drive". Heads turn if your car is NOT over $100,000. Top-end fashion boutiques entertain clients by appointment. Say it with me: "Ro-DEY-ehw." Nah..."Yippee-kiy-yay!"
8. Which city is the third largest in the area known as the Pacific Northwest and is situated near the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers?

Answer: Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon is nicknamed the "City of Roses". It is the third largest city in the Pacific Northwest. Portland, Maine is the second largest city named Portland in the country, far behind the rosy city. It is a very desirable city in the Northeast. Seattle, Washington, another prominent Northwestern city, offers more than just Starbucks. Finally: Eureka! I have found it! This town in the lovely Humboldt Bay area in northern California may not out-do Portland for roses, but is quite a nature-lover's find.

(Yes, I said Portland, Oregon is third largest city in the Pacific Northwest; the largest is Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada).
9. What Western city preceded Las Vegas as the most prominent place of casino gaming in America, well-established in the industry by the 1930s?

Answer: Reno, Nevada

Reno, Nevada is located within a beautifully forested wilderness area north of Lake Tahoe. Connecticut's Foxwoods Resort/MGM Grand and the Mohegan Sun Casino and Resort are the two biggest and most lucrative casino resorts in the world. Their story is a recent one, flourishing within the last two decades. On the other hand, Atlantic City's first casino went up in 1978. Its money hasn't seen its way down into the local economy, sadly, in this one-time lovely beach resort town.

I have no knowledge of Janet Nevada, but maybe she's with Carmen San Diego.
10. What city is the home of Columbia University? It's as American as 'apple' pie.

Answer: New York

Columbia is in Manhattan, the hub of New York City. Its campus was originally downtown near Wall Street as King's College after being given a charter by King George II of England in 1754. It later moved to mid-town. Its main campus is in Morningside Heights, adjacent to Harlem.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, home of the Ivy's Penn Quakers, formally known as the University of Pennsylvania, is a private school founded by Ben Franklin. Bogota is the capital of the South American country Columbia, traditionally known as one of the most cultured in Latin America. All prominent places in the Americas named Columbia, Columbus, Columbiana, Columbine, etc., ultimately derive their name from Christopher Columbus, mate.
