During the cold war many people were leaving the eastern U.S.S.R. run sector and going to live in the more prosperous western sector which was administered by the US and Britain. In one night a wall was built by the German Democratic Republic (communist East Germany) separating the east from the west. It was in place from 1961 until 1989 and many lives were lost trying to cross it.
