Although discovered by British explorer James Cook in 1774, France made New Caledonia a "strategic military location" in 1853 and was made a French territory in 1956.
2. Who were the first settlers of New Caledonia?

Answer: Kanaks

The Kanaks are thought to have migrated from South East Asia between 7000 and 5000 BC. The Mauis are from New Zealand and the Ramuas are made up. The Caldoches are "white New Caledonians" and mostly descend from French convicts.
3. What major event happened in 1984?

Answer: A civil uprising

In 1984, the Kanaks didn't like being treated as a minority in their own country and boycotted the 1984 elections. Violence started to shake the country and a state of emergency was declared.
4. What is the major export of New Caledonia?

Answer: Nickel

The nickel boom in the 1960's helped New Caledonia grow very rapidly. New Caledonia also has 25% of the world's nickel reserves, most of which is traded with France and Japan.

Noumea is home to 40% of all New Caledonians and is situated right on the beach. It is a top tourist destination for mostly Australians and New Zealanders.

The Loyalty Isalnds are a group of four upraised coral atolls off the east coast of New Caledonia, their landscape has not been altered much and they are covered in palm trees and magnificent caves and grottos.

Answer: Lighthouse

The French shipped the lighthouse to Amedee Island by mistake, and since then it has been a must-see attraction. It is a tiring 247 steps to the top but it is worth it. There is also a famous aquarium, but it's in Noumea.

Answer: 213679

Only 42% are Melanesian. Others are French, Indonesian and Vietnamese.
