Answer: Jeremy Thorpe

Jeremy was the leader of the Liberal Party for many years, and was tipped by some to be the next Prime Minister when a scandal broke around him. At the next election the Conservatives won the seat, to hold it until 1992 when the Liberal Democrats won it back again.

2. Barnstaple was a terrible traffic-jam area until the downstream bridge was built. When was this bridge opened?

Answer: May 2007

During WWII the Americans offered to build a downstream bridge because of the traffic probems they were causing in the town, but it was not until the twenty-first century that it was actually built and relieved the congestion in this busy market town.

3. Barnstaple lies at the mouth of which tidal river?

Answer: Taw

There have been plans for a downstream bridge for many years now, and work is due to start on this in 2004. At present only one bridge takes traffic from one side to the other, and as a consquence the traffic in Barnstaple can be pretty bad at times. The river itself, being tidal, changes its appearance constantly.

(NB: Q2 was updated in 2007 to allow for the differences made to the Link Road when the downstream bridge opened. The above was left for novelty value!)

Arlington Court is just eight miles north-east of Barnstaple; a large square white building, it stands completely alone in its own grounds with a beautiful lake - well worth a visit!

Answer: the Tarka Line

The Tarka Line, named for the otter in the locally-based book, 'Tarka the Otter', is just 38 miles long, but it takes nearly an hour for the train to reach the end of the line. This makes it a leisurely, and highly entertaining journey as it travels through some absolutely gorgeous countryside (not that I am biased, of course!)

Answer: Combe Martin

Braunton makes claim to be the largest village in the country, but Combe Martin has the longest high street. Also making claim is the Parish of North Molton, which is one of the largest in the country.

Answer: North Molton Ridge

North Molton Ridge is a spot literally on the edge of Exmoor and can be seen for miles in every direction. From this point on a clear day one can see Dartmoor on the horizon.

Answer: Lynton and Lynmouth

Connecting Lynton and Lynmouth is the famous cliff railway, which is still operating with the original 1890 Victorian machinary. It is run by the power of water, where each train has a tank of 700 gallon capacity, to be emptied and filled at bottom and top respecively to allow movement up and down the '1:1 3/4' gradient journey of the 500ft high cliff.

Answer: Lundy

Lundy lies where the Atlantic ocean meets the Bristol Channel with nothing between it and America! It is a small granite island of just three and a half miles by half a mile, but much loved by those who visit it again and again.
