Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You're a self-governing British Crown dependency. You sit in the Irish Sea. What island are you?

Answer: The Isle of Man

The Isle of Man, located about midway between Ireland and England, has a rich and unusual history, being inhabited since before 6500 BC. The island has its own language (Manx) similar to Gaelic, which is dying off since so few speak it. It has its own money (Manx pound) with a strange looking three legged seal on it.

The Bee Gees were born there before moving to Australia. The national dish is Spuds and Herrin (why leave off the "g")? Oh, and the cats have no tails. Weird.
2. You're a popular tourist destination off Florida's gulf coast. You lie in the Gulf of Mexico. I can see Fort Myers from your highpoint. What island are you?

Answer: Sanibel Island

Bermuda is far off the east coast of the USA in the Atlantic, and Amelia Island is a barrier island right along Florida's east coast. Key West, the southernmost point in the contiguous US, is in the Gulf of Mexico, but it's hundreds of miles from Fort Myers. Sanibel, the correct answer, is a fascinating island with many bird species and plants to observe.

The residents have fought hard to keep it non-commercial and wild. No building over three stories is allowed.
3. You are 240 kilometers from the mainland. You are a state in the Australian Commonwealth. What are you?

Answer: Tasmania

Tasmania is the smallest of the six Australian states, but the largest island of Australia at 68,401 sq. kilometers. It consists of one main island (64,519 sq. km) and more than 300 small surrounding islands. The 2010 population barely topped 500,000 as much of the island is set aside for parks, reserves and even some World Heritage Sites.

The capital and largest city is Hobart. Tasmania was joined to the mainland until about 10,000 years ago. Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island. It's located close to Adelaide and is part of South Australia.
4. You are the largest island in the contiguous United States. You have more people living on you than Ireland or Jamaica. Looking across the sound from your northern tip I can see Connecticut. What are you?

Answer: Long Island

Long Island is part of New York state and is separated from mainland New York and Connecticut by the Long Island Sound. The island runs 115 miles long from southwest to northeast and consists of four counties, two of which (Kings, Queens) are part of the five boroughs of New York City. Both JFK International and LaGuardia airports are on Long Island.

It is larger than Rhode Island and more populous than all but 13 US states.
5. You're on holiday. You cannot go to which island? (It's not a real island)

Answer: Halloween Island

This could be a tough one especially if you're not a Scotsman, because the Isle of Muck is a real, tiny, remote, two square mile island which is part of the Inner Hebrides off the northwest coast of Scotland. Only about thirty people live there. Easter Island in Polynesia is famous for its huge stone carved head sculptures and Christmas Island is also a real island, part of Australia, in the Indian Ocean southwest of Indonesia. Kiribati in the South Pacific has an island called Kiritimati which is sometimes called Christmas Island. That leaves Halloween Island as the imposter, as it only exists in a fantasy video game.
6. The San Juan Islands, where one can watch the killer whales and bald eagles, are an island group near Canada and off the coast of what major American city?

Answer: Seattle

Take a ferry from Seattle to the San Juan Islands and in a few hours you can be in the middle of one of the most beautiful island archipelagos in the world. Climb up Mt. Constitution on Orcas Island and get a spectacular view all the way south to Mount Rainier, west to Vancouver Island and north to the city of Vancouver on the Canadian mainland.
7. Spitsbergen, Norway, is an unusual island with some unusual laws. Which of these is one of their actual laws?

Answer: When traveling outside the main town, you must carry a rifle in case of polar bears

Spitsbergen is the main island and largest of the Svalbard group to the far north of Scandinavia above the Arctic Circle. The polar bear rifle carry law is the one on the books. The bears are a real threat and this is for your own protection. There are hot springs on the island and whales in the offshore waters, but no related ethnic or camera restrictions that I know about.

As for the salmon law...totally fishy. (Please don't lower rating because of bad pun.)
8. Tristan da Cunha is?

Answer: The most remote inhabited archipelago on earth

Tristan da Cunha is the name of a remote group of volcanic islands in the South Atlantic Ocean, and also the name of the main island in the group. It is 2,000 kilometers from the nearest inhabited island, 2,400 kilometers from continental Africa and 3,300 kilometers from South America.

The Royal Navy used the island as a secret radio station base from which to monitor Nazi u-boats during WWII.
9. What is unusual about Ni'ihau, the westernmost major Hawaiian island, also known as known as "The Forbidden Isle"?

Answer: It is entirely privately owned

The island was purchased from the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1864 by Elizabeth Sinclair. She was wife of a Scottish ship captain who moved his family New Zealand in 1841 and was later lost at sea. She and her children made a living farming and eventually relocated to Canada and then Hawaii.

Her descendants still own and inhabit the island. A limited number of tourists (safari trekkers) are now allowed to visit the island, which actually has beautiful beaches.
10. Which statement about Greenland is inaccurate?

Answer: Politically and culturally it is aligned with Canada

Greenland is an autonomous country but still considers itself within the kingdom of Denmark. 89% of the population is Greenland Inuit and the remainder a mix of mostly Scandinavian Europeans. For the past 1,000 years, Denmark, Norway or Iceland influenced and/or claimed sovereignty over Greenland, with Denmark eventually making it a colony in 1814.

In 1979, the Danish government granted the island home rule. Greenland is about one third the size of Australia, which is generally considered a continent rather than an island.
