Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which town is found on the shores of the Bay of Plenty?

Answer: Whakatane

The Bay of Plenty apparently derives its name from the fact that the British explorer James Cook thought its shores seemed particularly fertile. This is in contrast to the bay which afforded Cook little in the way of provisions and so earned itself the name the Bay of Poverty.
2. Mount Aspiring in the Southern Alps is sometimes known as New Zealand's _______?

Answer: Matterhorn

This is due to its triangular shape which resembles the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps.
3. Which is New Zealand's deepest fiord?

Answer: Doubtful Sound

The Doubtful Sound is 420m deep at its deepest point. It derives its name from the simple fact that James Cook was doubtful of manoevering his ship in and out safely.
4. What is New Zealand's longest fiord?

Answer: Dusky Sound

Dusky Sound stretches 40km inland from the Tasman Sea.
5. The Remarkables are a New Zealand mountain range. On which of the main islands would you find them?

Answer: South Island

The Remarkables are apparently so named because the range runs north to south, something which is highly unusual.
6. James Cook sailed south to this headland in 1769 and then sailed north again.

Answer: Cape Turnagain

Cape Runaway was the scene of an encounter between Cook's ship and some local Maoris in 1769 when Cook's crew fired on some Maori canoes, causing them to flee.

Cook left New Zealand from Cape Farewell in 1770.
7. When Abel Tasman visited New Zealand in 1643 he named this bay Murderers' Bay. By what name is it now better known?

Answer: Golden Bay

Four of Tasman's sailors were killed her in an encounter with the local Maoris. No European would return to New Zealand (or Aotearoa as it is to the Maoris) until James Cook in 1769.
8. Which planet, of these, lends its name to a New Zealand bay?

Answer: Mercury

The observation of the transit of Venus across the Sun was Cook's ostensible reason for his first voyage of discovery to the South Pacific in 1768-71. However, he also observed the transit of Mercury and the bay where he did so bore the planet's name thereafter.
9. Which of these is not a genuine geographical feature of New Zealand?

Answer: Wineglass Bay

Wineglass Bay can be found in Australia.

Cape Foulwind, Luncheon Cove (there is also a Supper Cove) and Facile Harbour can all be found on New Zealand's South Island.
10. Which explorer gave Cape Kidnappers its name?

Answer: James Cook

Apparently the name derives from the fact that local Maori met at this cape tried to kidnap a Tahitian member of Cook's crew in 1769.

Many of the current geographical names used in New Zealand stem from Cook's voyages.
