Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many stars on the New Zealand flag?

Answer: Four

The NZ flag features a blue background, the Union Jack in the top-left corner and, on the right, four stars representing the Southern Cross.
2. What is the name of New Zealand's indigenous people?

Answer: Maori

The Polynesians sailed to NZ in approximately 800 AD in huge double canoes. When they settled in NZ, they became known as the Maori. The Aborigines are the Australian original inhabitants and I made up the other two.
3. Who was the first white person to set foot on New Zealand?

Answer: Captain James Cook

While Abel Tasman discovered NZ 100 years before Captain Cook arrived, Tasman was frightened away by Maori tribes and so he never actually set foot in NZ. Captain Cook wasn't scared by people yelling and waving sticks.
4. What is New Zealand's national bird?

Answer: Kiwi

NZers are known as Kiwis. The kiwi is a large, brown flightless bird, and it is the only bird to have nostrils on the tip of its beak.
5. Complete the sentence: The Hector's __________ is one of the rarest sea creatures in the world.

Answer: Dolphin

The Hector's dolphin is only found in NZ, particularly off the coast of Akaroa, Bluff and the West Coast. They are black and grey with white markings. There are only approximately 7,270 of them left!
6. What is the name of New Zealand's national rugby team?

Answer: All Blacks

The All Blacks lost to France in the 2007 World Cup Quarter-Final! If the referee had noticed a really obvious forward pass, the All Blacks would have won - the forward pass led to a try.
7. Which date is ANZAC Day?

Answer: 25th April

ANZAC stands for Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. It is a day to celebrate the lives of the brave soldiers who fought in World War I at ANZAC Cove in Gallipoli.
8. What three islands make up the majority of New Zealand?

Answer: North Island, South Island and Stewart Island

Stewart Island is a small island at the very bottom of NZ. It houses many native endangered birds.
9. What is the name of the strait between the North Island and the South Island?

Answer: Cook Strait

Cook Strait is a very rough patch of water. It's named after Captain James Cook, the first white man to set foot on NZ.
10. What is the name of the sea between New Zealand and Australia?

Answer: Tasman Sea

The sea was named after Abel Tasman, the person who discovered Australia and NZ. He landed in Australia, but was too scared to land in NZ (he was scared of the Maori, as you well know by now!)
