Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Answer: Mississippi

The Mississippi is the second longest river entirely within the USA. It flows for 3,778km from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico.

The name derives from the Anishinabe people who called it "Messipi" or "Mee-zee-see-bee" - "Big River" or "Father of Waters."
2. Manaus and Belém

Answer: Amazon

The Amazon is the longest river in South America and the largest by displacement anywhere in the world. Such is the strength of its flow, that the Atlantic is freshwater for some 70 miles out from its mouth.

The river is 6,575 km in length, flowing from the Mantaro River to where it meets the Atlantic. There is some difficulty in pinpointing the exact mouth of the river, but Belém is the nearest city.
3. Derby and Nottingham

Answer: Trent

At 298km, the Trent is the third longest river in the United Kingdom. It rises at Biddulph Moor, Staffordshire, and flows to Trent Falls, Lincolnshire, where it meets the Ouse and becomes the Humber.

The Trent is the only north-flowing river in Great Britain (but not in the United Kingdom. Norther Ireland has several that flow northwards.) The Trent and associated canals were important transport links during the early Industrial Revolution in the Midlands of England.
4. Tocumwal and Swan Hill

Answer: Murray

At 2,508 km, the Murray is Australia's longest river and runs through the states of New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria. It rises in the Australian Alps and flows to the Southern Ocean at Goolwa, South Australia.

It is is the third longest navigable river in the world, after the Amazon and Nile. Although it provides water supplies for more than 1.5m households, parts of the river have dried up at times.
5. Bismarck, North Dakota, and Kansas City, Kansas.

Answer: Missouri

The Missouri is the longest river entirely within the USA. It flows for 3,767km from the Missouri Headwaters State Park to where it joins the Mississippi just north of St. Louis, Missouri.

The river's name comes from '8emessourit', an Algonquian term referring to "people with canoes". The first written account by settlers dates to 1673.
6. Nashik and Rajahmundry

Answer: Godavari

The Godavari is the second longest river in India. It flows 1,455 km from Brahmagiri Mountain, Nashik, to the Bay of Bengal.

The Godavari is important for irrigation. Over the years, more than 350 dams have been built. A number of important industries have been located along its route, taking advantage of hydroelectric power.
7. Budapest and Vienna

Answer: Danube

The Danube is Europe's second longest river. It runs for 2,850km from the Brigach in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, to a delta on the Black Sea that is shared between Tulcea County, Romania, and Odessa Oblast, Ukraine.

The Danube passes through ten countries, with a further nine also sharing the river's basin. It was an important trade route for centuries. In modern times, it is a magnet for water-borne tourism.
8. Khartoum, Sudan, and Jinja, Uganda

Answer: Nile

The Nile is the longest river in Africa and, depending on who you ask, the longest in the world. (The Brazilian government insists that the Amazon is the world's longest. Well they would, wouldn't they?)

There are also some questions of the 'proper' source of the Nile. Lake Victoria is often cited, but it has several feeder rivers of its own and the question is, should they be counted?

From Lake Victoria, the river runs 6,853km northwards through nine cities in 11 countries to the Mediterranean Sea.
9. Timbuktu, Mali, and Tembakounda, Guinea

Answer: Niger

The Niger runs some 4,180 km from Tembakounda in the Guinea Highlands to the Atlantic Ocean. The Niger is the third longest river in Africa, and the longest in the west of the continent. It is is thought to have been named by the Greeks.

From ancient times, the Niger was an important trade route into the African interior. It is navigable for about three-quarters of its length and, traditionally, was important for fishing.
10. Strasbourg and Cologne

Answer: Rhine

The River Rhine runs for 1,230km from its two main sources in Switzerland to the North Sea at the Netherlands.

Historically and culturally, the Rhine has been one of western Europe's most important waterways. The river is navigable for some 879km. That has led to great industrialisation along its route from the German/Swiss border to the North Sea.
