1. Which ocean surrounds three sides of Ireland?

Answer: Atlantic

Ireland is surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean and on the eastern side by the Irish Sea. The Atlantic coasts are very obviously indented with bays, harbours and inlets, over which high cliffs dominate. The eastern coast is far less indented.

Answer: 2

Dublin is the capital of the Republic of Ireland and Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is one of the constituent countries making up the United Kingdom. Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland in the same way Edinburgh and Cardiff are the capitals of Scotland and Wales respectively. Belfast is the site of the Northern Ireland parliament.
3. Which Irish city is world famous for glass/crystal production?

Answer: Waterford

The original factory was begun in 1783 by George and William Penrose to "produce plain and cut flint glass." Many changes have come about since. An unusual commission came from Alexander McQueen to design items for his London fashion extravaganza. These had to be wearable and with "fantastic light refractive qualities for the stage".

The Shannon is 200 miles long, has more than a dozen lakes and over a hundred islands. It forms a backbone through Ireland clearly splitting east from west. In 1014, Brien Boru, (victor at the Battle of Clontarf), sailed a fleet up the Shannon to Lough Rea to help him defeat the Viking longboats.

There are three main lakes occupying a broad valley stretching south between the mountains. On Lough Leane, (the Lake of Learning), lies the tiny island of Inisfallen. Once there was a monastic settlement there and the monks complied annals on the history of Ireland as they knew it. Their manuscript survives in a controlled atmosphere in the Bodleian Library in Oxford.
6. Which USA state capital goes with park to complete a famous Dublin landmark?

Answer: Phoenix

The Phoenix Park in Dublin is the largest urban park in Europe. It covers an area of 1,752 acres which includes gardens, zoo, wilderness, walking and nature trails. In 1979, Pope John Paul II celebrated mass here and a million attended. A huge cross marks the spot where the altar was for that mass.
7. Which Irish county should you visit to see W.B.Yeats' grave in Drumcliff Churchyard?

Answer: Sligo

Yeats died in France, his body was returned to Ireland after WW2 as he had wished to lie "under bare Ben Bulben's head". A high cross and the remains of a round tower can also be seen in Drumcliff.
8. With what sport is the Curragh in Kildare associated?

Answer: Horse racing

This comes from the Gaelic word 'Cuireach' meaning a racecourse. The first race was run in 1741 and by the 1760's a Turf Club was established to encourage horseracing in Ireland. Today, the Turf Club still has its headquarters in the Curragh, where all five flat racing classics are run.
9. What stone forms the Karst region of the Burren in County Clare?

Answer: Limestone

This area has a unique flora. Plants which would not normally be found together in one country bloom together in the one rock crevice.It covers an area of 300 sq. kilometres, archaeological sites abound. The word burren comes from the Gaelic 'Bhoireann' meaning stony place.
10. What is the Fastnet?

Answer: Lighthouse

This is Ireland's most famous lighthouse. It is built on a rocky outcrop about four miles south west of Cape Clear. It was called 'the teardrop' by emigrants long ago. Today the Fastnet is the turning point in a famous yacht race, which begins in Cowes and ends in Plymouth. (both in the UK).
