1. Akhenaten had a famous wife. Who was she?

Answer: Nefertiti

The famous bust of the famously beautiful Nefertiti is now in a museum in Berlin. In line with much of the artwork from Akhenaten's time it is lifelike rather than the stylised formal nature of other statuary.
2. What medical condition is it thought he suffered from?

Answer: Marfan's syndrome

The rare condition of Marfan's syndrome leads to long spindly fingers and toes and an elongated head. Some Egyptologists have suggested that he may have suffered from other medical conditions.
3. He moved the capital to a new city. What was it called?

Answer: Tel-el-Armana

Tel-el-Armana was quickly abandoned after his death. According to some records, he chose the site because he observed the sun setting through a curious cleft in the cliffs, and took this as a sign from The Aten.
4. He is believed to be the father of a famous Pharoah. Which one?

Answer: Tutankhamun

Although DNA testing identifies him as the father, it seems that his wife was not the mother, and Tutankhamun's mother is now generally referred to as "the younger lady" whose mummy was discovered in KV35 in 1898. She may have been Akhenaten's sister (or half sister) - intermarriage within the family was common as it was thought to preserve the bloodline.
5. Akhenaten swept away all the old gods apart from one. Which god did he retain?

Answer: The Aten

The disc of the sun - The Aten - features is many depictions of Akhenten. In all probability, although public worship of the 'old' gods was forbidden, many people and priests continued their worship in secret.
6. Akenhaten was raised as Crown Prince, always intended to succeed his father as Pharoah

Answer: False

The Crown Prince, Tutmose, died in an accident, quite late on in his father's life. Akhenaten had been training for the priesthood, as he was very much a thinker, and it was thought that his radical ideas could be suppressed as a priest.
7. Akenhaten was not his original name. What was it?

Answer: Amenhotep lV

He succeed his father Amenhotep III, but quickly adopted the other name. He had formulated his monotheistic ideas years before ascending the throne, and changed his regnal name to reflect his devotion to the one god The Aten
8. How long did Akhenaten reign over Egypt?

Answer: 17 years

He accomplished a tremendous amount in his 17 years as Pharoah; many of the pylons and boulevards at Karnak are attributable to him, although later pharoahs tried to erase him from history.
9. Akhenaten maintained wide-ranging diplomatic contacts.

Answer: True

The "Armana Letters" - a cache of correspondence discovered at the ruins of Tel-al-Armana - show him to have been an accomplished diplomat.
10. How long after his death was the monotheistic practise of worshipping the Aten abandoned and the pantheon of the old gods restored?

Answer: 4 years

Tutankhamun issued a decree denouncing the monotheism as an error. It is thought by some scholars that he was influenced by Ey the Grand Vizier who had never abandoned the old gods, and who had been charged with his care and education during his childhood.
