Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the Catholic Saint that was born outside Burgundy, but died inside it, at a monastery at Nevers on April 16, 1879?

Answer: Bernadette Soubirous

2. There remain lots of traces in Burgundy of its monastic traditions. One such place is Pontigny. Who was the saintly pious person that found refuge here till shortly before his death ?

Answer: Thomas a Becket

Joan of Arc cannot be considered as a good friend of the Burgundians as they were in alliance with her enemies, the English invaders. A monastery in Burgundy would not have been very safe for her.
Jean Calvin would probably not have found refuge in a Burgundian Catholic monastery either.
Mgr Lefebvre - who was first bishop of Dakar, and then of Tulle in France - was condemned by Pope John Paul II for exaggerated 'anti-modernism'.
Becket sheltered here from the anger of his King Henry II till the day he decided to return to Canterbury and was indeed promptly assasinated there.
3. One of the great abbots of Cluny was Petrus Venerabilis. It was he who as a reconciliator successfully mediated between the official Church and one of her leading philosophers. Who was that philosopher?

Answer: Petrus Abelardus

Abelardus was not very popular for his nominalist approach to the dispute of the so-called universalia, and his love-story with Heloisa won't have increased his popularity with the official church either.

Aquinas and Albertus Magnus, both Dominican friars, may have had their philosophical and theological opponents inside the Church but they never really were persona non grata. Augustine may have had to reconcile himself with God for his sinful youth, yet he never got into any real bad conflict with Rome.
4. What was the outlook of the typical habit worn by the monks of Cluny?

Answer: all-white

Red crosses may have been worn by Knights Hospitallers but not by the white monks of Cluny, whose origins were in the Benedictine tradition.
5. When the Cluniac monks had grown too rich and too successful, they did no longer meet the religious standards of some young reformers. One of them was Robert of Molesmes who reformed the order and created the abbey of Citeaux. What was the new name of the order?

Answer: Cistercians

Robert of Molesmes was declared a saint. Because of the successes of Bernard of Clairvaux the members of his order were at a given moment called the Bernardines. When they too knew their moment of lapsing into self-satisfaction, dom de Rance started a new reform in the abbey of La Trappe which led to the now popular name of Trappists. Greyfriars was a name given to the Franciscans in England.

The Dominicans, their traditional rivals, being the Blackfriars.
6. Also the outlook of their monks' outfit was changed. What was the new 'look'?

Answer: black cowl on white habit

A cowl is the hooded cloak worn by monks.
7. In which of these did St Bernard of Clairvaux, one of the leading monks of the Cistercian abbey of Fontenay, certainly NOT get involved?

Answer: promoting intellectual work rather than manual labour

St Bernard did not have a very high opinion of intellectuals. Scientia inflat (knowledge 'blows up') was a saying he certainly must have believed in. His enthusiasm for sanctity and reform did not only make him an enemy of error and sin outside the Church, but certainly at least as much of the shortcomings inside its ranks.
8. Among the villages and towns of Burgundy there are a great number that can show up outstanding examples of Romanesque church architecture. One of those places also became the centre of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Which of these is it?

Answer: Paray-le-Monial

Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque was a Visitandine nun at the monastery of Paray-le-Monial in the 17th century. The private revelations made to her became a main factor in the promotion of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Francois de Sales was one of her protectors.
9. What is the name of the Prior of the famous Reconciliation Centre of Taize?

Answer: Roger Schutz

de Talleyrand first was bishop of Autun before he became Napoleon's Foreign Secretary, but he does not qualify as a very saintly character.

Eiffel was born in Dijon in 1832 and gave Paris its Tour Eiffel. Henri Vincenot is one of Burgundy's more popular authors, famous for such books as 'the Pope of Snails' and 'Disorder'. Roger Schutz, the son of a Swiss protestant pastor started Taize and its Reconciliation movement in the autumn of 1944.
10. Saintly places do not always escape all worldliness. The Abbey of Fontenay where St. Bernard of Clairvaux once was a leading religious inspiration, recently became the place where Gerard Depardieu starred in the making of a very successful movie. What was its title?

Answer: Cyrano de Bergerac

Hiroshima Mon Amour, was by Alain Resnais. Nevers, 1959.
Le Repos du Guerrier, by Vadim - and with Brigitte Bardot - dates back to 1962 and was made at Dijon.
Les Valseuses, by Bertrand Blier used the Ouche Valley in the Cote d' Or Department as its scenery.-
Jean Rappenau's Cyrano starred Anne Brochet and Gerard Depardieu and was mainly filmed in Dijon ... and Fontenay.
