Answer: Margaret Thatcher

In 1984 the IRA decided to murder her by blowing up the Conservative Party Conference in Brighton. Five people died and 34 were seriously injured. Mrs Thatcher (nicknamed the Iron Lady) was unharmed. The bomber was caught and sentencd to 35 years but released early in 1999.
3. Who was the founder of Judo?

Answer: Jigoro Kano

Jigoro was the son of a Shinto priest, from Kobe in Japan. As a young man he was regareded as a runt, at 5ft 2 and 90 lbs. He was bullied badly, and so became determined to defend himself. He mastered Ju Jitsu, and then started modifying it developing his own martial art, Judo.

British troops in Boston were attacked by an armed mob, they opened fire, and five people were killed. Rebel propagandists then spun the incident out of proportion in order to provoke a rebellion.

Answer: 1895

The Rugby Football Union was dominated by upper class people. When the working class clubs of Yorkshire and Lancashire wanted to go professional in order to compete on a fair footing, they refused and threatened to kick them out. The northern clubs left, founding the Northern Rugby Union, and later changing the rules, becoming the Rugby Football League.
6. In what year was the battle of Kursk?

Answer: 1943

After the Germans were defeated at Stalingrad, they withdrew ahead of the Red Army, until it formed a huge salient, then the Germans counter attacked over the entire front. The largest individual fight in the battle was at Prokhorovka, with 1,500 individual armoured vehicles involved. Eventually the Germans were forced to admit defeat, and the Russians continued their inexorable advance towards Berlin.
7. Who were the rulers of France and Prussia at the start of the Franco-Prussian war?

The Franco-Prussian War (1870-71) is regarded by many historians as a conflict largely engineered by the Prussian Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck, one of the greatest (and most amoral) politicians in history). He provoked the French into a declaration of war, a war in which the inevitable outcome was a total Prussian victory.
8. Who were the combatants in the Yom Kippur war in 1973?

Answer: Israel versus Egypt and Syria

After Israel's victory in the Six Days' War the Egyptians and Syrians decided to launch a surprise attack from two directions to crush the Israelis. After initial success they were driven back behind their own borders, and the Israelis had invaded Egypt when peace was agreed, with Egypt being forced to recognise the Israeli state in the longer run.

The war is more commonly known as the Arab-Israeli War.

The Mughal Empire was the dominant power in the Indian subcontinent between the 16th and 19th centuries, and Delhi grew wealthy. However the empire declined and the city itself was sacked, the city came under British control in 1857.

Answer: The Jazz Singer 1927

"The Jazz Singer" wasn't the first film with sound, however it was the first feature length film in which spoken dialogue was used as part of the dramatic action. The "Four Horsemen" was Rudolph Valentino's first lead role.
11. Who developed the smallpox vaccine?

Answer: Edward Jenner

Jenner observed that people who caught a much milder illness, cowpox, never caught Smallpox. He deliberately infected a small boy with cowpox, waited till he recovered and then exposed him to Smallpox. The boy did not develop the illness.
12. Where did the Hittites come from?

Answer: Anatolia

The Hittites came from what is now Turkey, and established a powerful empire, which was the main rival of the ancient Egyptians, the inconclusive battle of Qadesh is one of the best known in ancient history.

Galileo did spot Uranus but he thought it was a star, it was first discovered to be a planet by William and Caroline Herschel in March 1781.

The founder of the Cynics was Antisthenes. He believed that the only way to be truly happy was to pursue virtue, and abandon all over pursuits. They were called the dogs because it was said they lived like them, abandoning money, hygiene, society, etc. in the pursuit of a happy and virtuous life.
