Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For years after North and South America were discovered many European nations claimed and fought over land. England (and later, Britain) sent over representatives to claim and live in the land. The first permanent English settlement is known as Jamestown located in what is now Virginia. Over a period of time the settlers, also known as colonists, claimed more land that was divided into colonies. The colonies were located along the east coast. How many colonies in North America rebelled against Britain to become an independent nation?

Answer: 13

At first the colonists got along well with Britain but eventually they were treated unfairly. Britain passed laws and taxes that the colonists believed were unfair. To enforce the laws, Britain sent over representatives to rule over the colonists. This was considered unfair because Britain would not allow any American representatives in British Parliament.

This is were the phrase "no taxation without representation" came from. Eventually these disagreements would cause serious conflicts.
2. Britain placed high taxes on the colonists. One of them taxed imported tea. The colonists believed they were being unfairly taxed, so they decided to boycott the tea. One day a group of colonists, disguised as Native Americans, boarded a ship containing large amounts of tea and dumped it all overboard. What is the name of this event?

Answer: Boston Tea Party

The British responded to this event with even more acts in an attempt to control the colonists. The Intolerable Acts ended self-government in Massachusetts. This made the situation worse and caused even more protests. Eventually the problem would get worse, causing the American Revolution in which America would fight for it's independence.
3. As the Colonies expanded westward they claimed land already "owned" by the Native Americans. Conflict over the land resulted in a war (which was also part of a much wider conflict fought in Europe, Asia and the Carribean). What is the name of this war?

Answer: French and Indian War

Britain and France have been rivals many times throughout their history. As the colonists pushed westward they angered many Native Americans. The French, however, got along well with the Native Americans. In attempt to defeat their enemy, France and the Native Americans became allies to fight Britain.
4. The American Revolution started in 1775 and lasted until 1783. The purpose of the war was for America to become an independent country of Britain. In the second year of the war Thomas Jefferson, with the help of several others, wrote a document claiming America's independence and grievances toward Great Britain. What is the name of this document?

Answer: Declaration of Independence

The signing of the Declaration of Independence did not, in itself, grant Americans independence. From the British point of view this was considered treason, which is punishable by death. The Americans first had to fight in the Revolution. In 1783 America won the war and became an independent country.
5. After the end of the Revolutionary War, America was its own country but did not yet have a government. The type of government had been debated during the Revolution. What is the name of the document in which America's first government was based upon, which was ineffective?

Answer: Articles of Confederation

The Articles of Confederation gave very little power to the federal government. There was no president and the federal government had no power to enforce its laws or collect taxes. The states were acting as their own countries and many problems and riots broke out.
6. The various states realized that under the Articles of Confederation America would fail. Leaders from most states met in Philadelphia to create a new government under what is known as the Constitution. What year was it ratified?

Answer: 1788

The U.S. Constitution has been in affect since its ratification in July 1788. It is referred to as the "supreme law of the land" which means everyone must follow it. All laws that are created must not contradict it. Changes to the Constitution are known as amendments.
7. Some founders would not sign the Constitution because it did not protect the rights of citizens. Therefore, it was agreed to create amendments to safeguard these rights if the Constitution was ratified. What are the 10 amendments ratified in 1791 known as?

Answer: Bill of Rights

The rights included in the Bill of Rights serve many purposes. Some amendments grant rights to all Americans and allow them to perform their daily activities. An example is the 1st Amendment, which grant Americans the freedom of speech, press, assembly, religion, and petition.

Other amendments such as the 5th and 6th protect the rights of those accused of a crime. The 10th Amendment gives states the powers that are not granted to the federal government.
8. After America became an independent country one of its main goals was to expand westward. In 1803 America bought a huge portion of land from France nearly doubling the size of the country. This land purchase became known as the Louisiana Purchase. Who was president at the time of this purchase?

Answer: Thomas Jefferson

The U.S. paid a relatively small 15 million dollars for the Louisiana Purchase. This would be equivalent to about 233 million dollars today. All or part of 15 states were created from this land.
9. Decades after the American Revolution, America and Great Britain still had disagreements. Great Britain was restricting trade and supporting Native Americans as they fought for land against America. This caused another war whose name is the year it started in. What year did the war start in?

Answer: 1812

The War of 1812 is also known as the Second War of Independence. After the war America and Britain signed a treaty that ended most of their disagreements. The two countries have been on good terms ever since.
10. Before the Civil War slavery was a major issue in the USA. As new states were admitted they had to decide whether to be for or against slavery. However, America tried to keep the balance between free and slave states. What was passed in 1820 to keep this balance?

Answer: Missouri Compromise

The Missouri Compromise created a boundary that affected slavery in future states. Proposed states north of this line were prohibited from allowing slavery. The only exception is that slavery was allowed in the proposed state of Missouri.
