Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Bauhaus was founded in 1919 in Weimar and moved to Dessau in 1925. In which current German states are these cities located?

Answer: Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt

Weimar is in Thuringia (the eleventh largest German state in area) and Dessau is in Saxony-Anhalt (eighth largest in area).
2. In the same year the Bauhaus was founded, Weimar was also the stage for which important event in German history?

Answer: The establishment of the Weimar Republic, when the German Empire was replaced by a parliamentary republic.

The Weimar Republic ended in 1933 with the appointment of Adolf Hitler as Chancellor and the establishment of the Third Reich. The term 'Weimar Republic' is a nickname which apparently was first used only after the republic had collapsed.
3. In 1775, the famous author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe moved to Weimar, where he lived for several decades and died in 1832. Which tragic play is generally considered his best known work?

Answer: Faust

In the play, Faust makes a deal with the devil Mephistopheles.

Goethe's interest in the Faust theme(s) lasted for most of his active creative life. He wrote an early draft of 'Faust' (now referred to as the Urfaust') in 1772-75, but it was not published at the time. Faust, Part I appeared in 1808 and Part II (which is meant to be read rather than performed) was published in 1832 shortly before Goethe's death in the same year.
4. Goethe and his close friend Friedrich Schiller were part of which cultural and literary movement?

Answer: Weimar Classicism

Weimar Classicism also involved authors Herder and Wieland. (The notion that Goethe and Schiller belong to the German Romantic movement is a well known high school student howler, based on their years of birth and death).
5. Dessau was the birthplace of composer Kurt Weil, famous as a result of the "Threepenny Opera". Who collaborated with Weil in this piece?

Answer: Bertolt Brecht

The "Threepenny Opera" was an adaptation of "The Beggar's Opera" and included the song "Mack the Knife".
6. Hugo Junkers is considered the father of commercial aviation and produced his F.13 model at his Dessau plant. Why was the F.13 special?

Answer: It was the first all metal aircraft.

The F.13's first flight was in 1919 - the same year the Bauhaus was founded in Weimar.
7. Both Weimar and Dessau were part of the German Democratic Republic (also known as East Germany) which lasted from 1949 to 1990, while Berlin was divided into East and West. Which country controlled the eastern part of Berlin?

Answer: USSR

German Reunification in 1990 ended the division of the country and Berlin was reunited as one city.
8. When Germany was divided between East and West, Berlin was the capital of the German Democratic Republic. Which city was the capital of West Germany?

Answer: Bonn

Bonn was the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 1990.
9. Which of these terms best describes the kind of designs that the Bauhaus used and promoted?

Answer: Modern

The Bauhaus designs were simple, unmistakably modern and were intended to be functional. In the period c. 1918-1945 art and design became highly politicized in Germany, and hardline nationalists (not only the Nazis) rejected modernism in art and design as 'un-German' and even as 'cultural Bolshevism'.
10. Why did the Bauhaus move, first from Weimar to Dessau and then from Dessau to Berlin?

Answer: It was made unwelcome in Weimar and Dessau

The city of Weimar swung sharply from Left to Right and the subsidies paid to the Bauhaus were drastically cut. Later, much the same fate befell the Bauhaus in Dessau.
