Answer: Cameron

Simon Cameron was a political boss who considered Government positions as a chance to get rich. He earned the nickname by enriching himself from the Winnebago Indian land-claim funds. Lincoln appointed him Secretary of War in repayment for electoral votes he gave Lincoln in the 1860 Republican convention.
2. This southern woman kept a diary of her life during the war. Who was she?

Answer: Mary Chesnut

She was the daughter of former South Carolina Gov. and U. S. senator Stephen Miller. She was an observer of the events and personalities that shaped the CSA. She condensed her diary to 150,00 words from the originial 400,00 words. It was first published in 1905, 40 years after her death.

Mary Ann Ball Bickerdyke ran over anyone who stood in the way of her self appointed diuties. She was born in Ohio and became the most colorful nurse during the war. At Gen. Sherman's request, she rode at the head of the XV Corps in the grand review in Washington at the end of the war.

By the end of the war with the help of the U. S. Sanitary Commission she had built 300 hospitals and aided the wounded on 19 battlefields.

She was born in New Orleans but moved to Mich.. At age 18 she ran off to New York to become an actress. She became a spy for the Union. She was captured and sentenced to be hanged but before this could be carried out Union troops invaded Shelbyville, Ky. and saved her. She died in 1893 by her own hand, taking a high dose of opium.

He was an ambitious politician who wanted to be president. He was a lawyer from Ohio. In 1862 he attempted to lead radical Republicans against Pres. Lincoln. He tried to resign but once but Pres. Lincoln refused it, but the second time he tendered his resignation it was accepted (1864). Lincoln appointed him as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and he presided over the 1868 impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson.

Answer: Rose Greenhow

Rose O'Neal Greenhow was a rich, attractive widow in Washington social circles. She joined the CSA espionage systen in Washington. She was arrested in 1861 and imprisoned in the Old Capitol Prison. In May 1862 she was deported to Richmond. Pres. Davis sent her on a diplomatic mission to Europe.

In October 1864 she tried to re-enter the CSA aboard the blockade runner "Condor". It was chased by Union war ships off the coast of N. C.. Fearing capture and return to prison she requested to be put ashore in a small life boat.

She drowned when her boat was swamped. Her body was recovered and was buried in Wilmington, Del.

Answer: Charles Adams

Adams began his political career as a member of the Whig party. When the Whig part split due to the slavery issue he became a Republician. His mission to England was to prevent England from recognizing the CSA as an independant nation. After the war he stayed in England until 1868 to began negotiations regarding reimbursment to the USA for losses on Northern ships by CSA ships that had sailed from England.
8. This young southern girl was made an honorary member of Gen. Jackson's staff with the rank of Captain for the information she supplied to him in the capture of Front Royal, Va.. Who was she?

Answer: Belle Boyd

Dubbed "La Belle Rebelle" by a french war correspondent she continued to spy for the CSA and also serve as a courier and scout for Col. John S. Mosby. She was captured and sent to Old Capitol Prison but released later in a prisoner exchange. She was again arrested in 1863 and contrated typhoid fever while in prison.

She was released in December of that year but continued spying for the CSA.
9. He served as Pres. Lincoln's first Vice Pres. Who was he?

Answer: Hannibal Hamlin

As Vice-President he resented his idleness, but did not want to be replaced. After his Vice-presidency he was collector of customs for the port of Boston, and again served in the senate 1869-1881. He died on July 4, 1891.
10. This poet worked in the Union hospitals in Washington D. C.. He became known as the "Good Gray Poet". Who was he?

Answer: Walt Whitman

He began to visit hospitals in the Washington area. When his brother was wounded he ministered to him but witnessed the suffering of the wounded and felt he had to help. He dedicated himself to nursing the wounded and dying soldiers of both sides.
