Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The speech honors those who died in the battle of Gettysburg. When did this deadly battle occur?

Answer: July 1 - July 3, 1863

The hot summer of '63, considered to be the turning point of the war.
2. The speech was given on November 19, 1863 in Gettysburg to dedicate ...

Answer: The Soldiers' National Cemetery

After the war so many people lay dead that it was a huge effort to bury them in the Cemetery, Lincoln then came to help dedicate the Cemetery with his Address.
3. Who was the main speaker of the day?

Answer: Edward Everett

Edward Everett was considered to be one of the best orators of his day; his speech lasted two hours. Although very few people remember what Everett said, he himself loved Lincoln's much shorter speech.

T.H. Stockton was the minister who spoke the prayer of the event.

David Wells was a Pennsylvania attorney who was also the organizer of the event and burial.

And John Nicolay was Lincoln's private secretary to whom he gave a copy of the speech.
4. How many proper names are used in Lincoln's Gettysburg Address?

Answer: 1

"God" is the only proper name he uses, not even the name of the battle or of the cemetery that he is dedicating are in his Address!
5. Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg address on the back of an envelope while traveling to Gettysburg on the train.

Answer: False

Copies exist of his Address that he had written and edited in Washington DC, he also did some editing the night before in Gettysburg.
6. How was Lincoln's speech received at first?

Answer: Mixed reception.

Some newspapers actually criticized it!
7. How many surviving copies of the Gettysburg Address are written in Lincoln's hand?

Answer: Five

They are: The Nicolay Text, The Wills Text, The Hay Text, The Springfield Text, and The Baltimore Fair Text.

All are named for the people or places directly associated with the preserved copy.
8. When Lincoln gave his Address he was standing in the center of the circle of the grave yard indicated by hemispherical rows of graves, where the tall column of the Soldiers' National Monument stands today.

Answer: False

It was actually located 40 feet north east of the outer circle of Soldiers' Grave.

A note signed by the president of the committee for the dedication ceremony, David Wills, in a copy of an 1865 report explained clearly that what appears as the obvious central location for the Address was not the actual one used.
9. How many words are in the Gettysburg Address and how long did it last?

Answer: 272 words and just over 2 minutes.

In writing I was always taught that the fewer words you use the better.
10. What later famous speech directly invoked Lincoln's Gettysburg Address?

Answer: Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech.

"Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice."
