Commissioned on May 12,1938 and set course for Rio de Janeiro,Brazil on her shakedown cruise. The ship was commanded by Captain Newton H. White. Built by workers paid by the new Public Works Administration, one of the new Federal programs created by President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal.

The Enterprise was a rarity as she survived the war even though she received battle damage on many occasions. Her scout planes encountered Japanese planes that had participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. She stayed in the war until May 1945 when it received major damage and needed to be repaired, although the Enterprise was not sunk.

During World War II her planes sunk 71 ships.
