1. Which of these battles resulted in the most casualties?

Answer: Stalingrad

At Stalingrad there were around two million casualties. The first Battle of the Somme produced just over one million.
2. Which of these battles is believed to be the worst, in terms of casualties, to take place on British soil?

Answer: Location unknown, Iceni v Romans

This battle which took place in AD61 produced around 80,000 casualties. Flodden was the second worst at 20,000.
3. The Treaty of Versailles ended which twentieth century conflict?

Answer: World War One

The Palace of Versailles is about 15 miles west of Paris. Many historians believe that the Treaty of Versailles was one of the main causes of World War Two. This was because the Treaty was very harsh to Germany, particulary in relation to the huge reparations the Germans were asked to pay.
4. In which year was the Battle of Falkirk?

Answer: 1298

This battle was fought between the English and the Scots on the 22nd of July 1298. There were around 5,000 casualties.
5. Which of these wars was the longest?

Answer: The Hundred Years' War

The Hundred Years War lasted for one hundred and sixteen years (1337 to 1453). The Greco-Persian Wars lasted for fifty one years (499 to 448BC).
6. What was the worst battle of the Napoleonic Wars in terms of casualties?

Answer: Leipzig, Germany

There were 120,000 casualties at the Battle of Leipzig which took place in October 1813. Waterloo was only the fourth worst battle. Casualties there were around 52,000.
7. Between which years did the Second Punic War take place?

Answer: 218-202BC

Both Punic Wars were fought between Rome and Carthage. The First Punic war lasted from 264BC until 241BC.
8. In which war did the famous Charge of the Light Brigade take place?

Answer: The Crimean War

The Charge of the Light Brigade took place at the Battle of Balaclava. One of the most famous figures of the Crimean War was Florence Nightingale, who showed tremendous courage whilst assisting wounded soldiers.
9. Which King won the Battle of Stamford Bridge?

Answer: Harold Godwinson

Harold Godwinson marched north to Stamford Bridge to face the army of Harold Hardrada. After winning that battle, his army returned south to face the army of William the Conqueror. They were defeated and Harold was killed.
10. What was the fastest fighter aircraft of World War Two?

Answer: Messerschmitt Me 163

The Me 163 had a top speed of 596 mph (959 km/h). The Mustang was the fastest American fighter at 487mph (784 km/h)
