Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Well, actually I do believe that chocolate makes the world go round. So what do Aussies call those little round, brightly coloured, candy-coated chocolates that Nestle make (not the similarly delicious American-originated M&M's)?

Answer: Smarties

Did you know that they first make the little round chocolate bits, then smooth them off before giving them a polished sugar coating and lastly they polish the yummy little things? I didn't, but I discovered this at http://www.nestle.com.au/schoolprojects/smarties.asp
2. Talking of round chockies, what do we call the round balls of chocolate-coated, aerated malt confection?

Answer: Maltesers

Maltesers became popular for the wonderful noise they made rolling down the steps of the cinema. A national pastime that, fortunately or unfortunately, has disappeared with the advent of carpeted stairs.
3. Yes, they are good, but in my opinion there is nothing better than Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate. One of the most delicious ways to consume it is in a wrinkly, folded bar. It's only 35 grams but you'll need the wrapper to catch all the bits that crumble off as you bite. What do Cadbury call this delight?

Answer: Flake

Does this description from Cadbury make you hungry?
"The unique, delicate strands of Crumbly, Cadbury 'Dairy Milk' Milk Chocolate make Flake perfect for that indulgent moment. No other chocolate can create the Flake experience. It is a totally absorbing experience, extending beyond taste and seducing all the senses allowing you to 'switch off' for a few moments."

As well as the old favourite dairy milk Flake, you can now buy Flake Snow, Flake Noir and Flake Luxury.
4. It's wrapped in a characteristic purple wrapper, but this chocolate bar is not made by Cadbury. What is the name of the absolutely divine, chocolate-covered honeycomb bar made in Australia by Nestle?

Answer: Violet Crumble

When I was a child, Violet Crumbles were made by Rowntree-Hoadley. The Rowntree company was bought out in 1988 by growing giant Nestle. Violet Crumbles are one of the Great Chocolates of the World and a very popular line, available in a range of sizes and packages.
It returned to Aussie ownership in 2018 when it was sold by Nestle to Robern Menz (MFG) Pty Limited.
5. It would hardly be proper of me to write a quiz on Australian chocolates and forget one of our nation's favourites, a cherry mixture inside a rather delicious Cadbury Old Gold chocolate. What is it called?

Answer: Cherry Ripe

Cadbury describe Cherry Ripe as "Australia's oldest and most loved chocolate bar". Not surprising.
6. Cadbury make a range of "chunky bars", mostly 55 gram versions of larger blocks. An interesting one has 6 pieces, each a different flavour. What is the name of this pineapply, orangey, strawberry, turkish delight, coconutty, caramelly yummy?

Answer: Snack

In Cadbury's own words:
"Snack is Cadbury 'Dairy Milk' Milk Chocolate filled with a variety of fruit-flavoured fondants including strawberry, pineapple, orange, coconut ice, Turkish Delight and caramel. It is sweeter than pure 'Dairy Milk' Milk Chocolate."

7. How many pieces do most of the Cadbury chunky bars (the individual serve 55g versions of larger blocks) have these days?

Answer: 7

In the old days they only had 6 pieces per bar and were much easier to divide. But then, I don't think you're meant to share them...
8. Mars Confectionery make a bar somewhat like their Mars Bar, but with peanuts in the caramel. What is this delicious chocky called?

Answer: Snickers

The Snickers bar was first introduced as we know it in 1930 in the USA and sold for a nickel, but it had been introduced before in 1923 without its chocolate coating. I am not sure of the date of introduction to Australia but I distinctly recall it, perhaps in the early 80's.
9. Cadbury also make a bar that is characterised by the peanuts in the chocolate that covers the wafers and caramel. What is this chocolate called?

Answer: Picnic

This is how Cadbury describe Picnic:
"Combine thin delicate fingers of crisp wafer, the irresistible temptation of chewy caramel with the goodness of rice crisps, all generously encased in rich Cadbury chocolate... and you've got yourself... one pretty big, ugly looking chocolate bar really.
Cadbury Picnic. Deliciously Ugly."

10. One of my favourite chocolate bars is a cadbury milk chocolate covering a bar of crunchie honeycomb. What is this chocolate bar called?

Answer: Crunchie

The arguments regarding the best honeycomb bar remain unresolved. By the way, did you pick up my clue, the misspelled "crunchie" in the question? Hope you had a sweet time doing this quiz!
