Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Climbing a route successfully, placing protection as you go but never falling or resting on your protection, is called what?

Answer: Redpointing

It is wise to find a low rated climb and redpoint it twice. After you do this, move up one rating and so on. This will raise your level until you are climbing 5.15s.
2. You are on lead and you have just placed your piece. You pull slack from your rope and clip in. You realize you have pulled slack from below your last piece. What have you done?

Answer: Z-clipped

Z-clipping is not a good thing to do!
3. What is the climbing term for adding bolts to an established route?

Answer: Retro bolting

If you are starting out do not place bolts.
4. You come to a route that you have never climbed before. You start climbing and placing protection. You reach the top of the climb without resting or falling. What is the term for this type of climb?

Answer: Onsight

Onsighting is probably the biggest climbing confidence booster.
5. What is an ice climbing move where you throw your leg over your arm to extend your reach for axe placement?

Answer: Figure 4

This move can also be used in bouldering.
6. A hold that is rounded and normally held on to with a flat open hand is what?

Answer: Sloper

Practice open hand techniques. Using open hand as much as possible will save your strength so you will have more in reserve when you need it.
7. What is it when you bring your hand or foot to the hold where your other hand or foot is already placed, before moving that placement?

Answer: Matching

Sometimes a simple match can make the difference in getting to the next move. Sometimes the answer is right in front of you. Practice balancing techniques and you can master this move.
8. Don clips his rope into his last piece. As he continues climbing he falls. His rope pops out of his last draw. Don hits the ground and dies. What did Don probably do when he had clipped in to his last piece?

Answer: Back clipped

When clipping into a draw, make sure the rope is running from the back out to you, and not from the front out the back to you. If you do this, the rope can cross the gate and pop out when you fall. Hang a quickdraw somewhere above you and practice clipping.
9. Jeff rappels down a route and places protection as he goes. When he reaches the bottom, he climbs the route clipping into the protection he pre-placed. He makes it to the top without falling or resting. What has he done?

Answer: Pinkpointed

Pinkpointing is not cheating, really. Pinkpointing is great for beginner tradmonkeys weening themselves off sport.
10. Which is not a climbing move?

Answer: Slumper

A chicken wing is when you use your elbow, forearm, and triceps to to jam yourself into a crack or chimney. An arm bar is when you use your triceps and palm to create an opposed force to keep yourself in a crack or chimney. A hand jam is when you jam your hand into a crack for a hold.
