Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a four-handed game, how many cards are used?

Answer: 43

Each player is dealt 10 cards with three in the kitty.
2. For a four-handed game, which cards are the lowest in value in Hearts and Spades?

Answer: 4 of Hearts and 5 of Spades

For a four-handed game, Hearts and Diamonds from four upwards are used, and five upwards for Clubs and Spades.
3. Regardless of what is bid, what is the highest card?

Answer: Joker

The Joker is always highest, followed by the Jack of that suit, except in No Trumps.
4. What is the third highest card in a bid of 8 Spades?

Answer: Jack of Clubs

Jacks in the bid suit of that colour are called Bowers. If the bid is Spades, then the Joker is highest, followed by Jack of Spades, Jack of Clubs, the Ace, King down to 5 (4-handed game). Red Jacks are only bowers if Hearts or Diamonds are trumps.
5. Like Bridge, some suits are valued higher than others. Which of the four suits is valued highest in 500?

Answer: Hearts

No Trumps are highest, followed by Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs and Spades.
6. How many tricks need to be won in a 'Slam' bid?

Answer: 10

There are 10 tricks in every hand. A 'Slam' bid requires all 10 tricks to be won by declarer and partner.
7. The Kitty is very handy (sometimes) in 500. What happens to it when a bid is decided?

Answer: Picked up by declarer and 3 cards discarded.

The dealer deals 10 cards to each player and 3 to the kitty. The declarer (the one making the highest bid) picks these cards up, decides which to keep to improve the hand, and discards three.
8. What is the lowest possible opening bid in any suit and no-trumps?

Answer: 6

A successful bid of 6 Spades would require the declarer and his partner to win 6 or more of the 10 tricks. 9 Hearts would require the winning of 9 or 10 of the tricks and so on.
9. How many points would a successful bid of 8 Diamonds win the declarers?

Answer: 280

6 bids are worth the following:-
6 Spades = 40 points
6 Clubs = 60 points
6 Diamonds = 80 points
6 Hearts = 100 points
6 No Trumps = 120 points
with an extra hundred points for each bid above 6.
So 6 Diamonds = 80 points, 7 diamonds = 180 points and so on.
10. Another bid possible in 500 is 'Misere'. What does this bid involve?

Answer: Declarer losing every trick with partner not playing.

Misere may be bid after a 7 call. If successful, the declarer plays alone against the 2 opponents and must lose every trick for 250 points. If someone overbids (8 - except in Spades), then declarer may bid 'open misere', and show the opponents the hand face-up as it is played.

A successful bid here is worth 500 points. 10 no trumps outbids open misere, although there are variations on this rule.
