Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these is not a structural option for a koi or goldfish pond?

Answer: spray-on polymer liner

I prefer the flexible rubber liner which can be purchased in virtually any size. It molds to the shape of the pond and allows for a lot of creativity in the size and shape of the pond.
2. Which of these statements is true?

Answer: Most fish and aquatic plants do well in a sunny location.

Goldfish and koi thrive in a sunny location and so do most aquatic plants. Sunlight will grow algae in your pond but it can be controlled and many fish actually eat it.
3. If you plan to have fish in your pond, which of these statements is not true?

Answer: If your pond ices over in the winter, your fish will die.

If your pond ices over, your fish should be fine, provided they have a sufficient depth of water. Never break the ice by banging on it, as this will cause stress to the fish.
4. Why should your pond be level around the top edges?

Answer: If not, the pond liner will be visible and unsightly.

The pond liner will be exposed on the higher side because the water will seek its own level. It will not only be unsightly but the sun may deteriorate the liner.
5. Which substance which can build up in your pond is the most toxic to fish?

Answer: ammonia

Ammonia is a product of fish waste and/or rotting plant material. If it builds to high levels, you can lose your fish quickly!
6. If mixing concrete or mortar for your pond, the consistency before pouring should be similar to what?

Answer: toothpaste

If the mix is too watery or too dry, it won't set right. Add the water a little at a time while mixing.
7. If you have floating water plants and fish, the plants should cover no more than what fraction of the pond's surface?

Answer: one third

Too many floating plants will block beneficial sunlight from your fish and any underwater plants.
8. Fish in a pond with plants and algae don't actually need to be fed.

Answer: True

They can live on the algae and whatever insects they might find. If you enjoy feeding them, be careful not to overfeed. Do not feed them more than they will consume in about five minutes.
9. Which of these animals will probably not be a threat to your fish?

Answer: squirrel

Herons and raccoons are the greatest threats. Cats are a lesser threat and squirrels should pose no threat at all.
10. Depictions of water gardens may be found dating back to when?

Answer: 3000 BC

Illustrations of water gardens on Egyptian tombs date back as early as 3000 BC!
