Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the traditional French bread that is sold in a rounded shape and lent its name for the French word for bread bakery?

Answer: Boule

Boule is sold in round, squashed balls. The French word "boulangerie" means a bread bakery. Boule is a simple type of bread to make and it can be made from any type of flour, but is most commonly white flour.
2. Muffuletta, a popular Italian bread, is most often and traditionally used to make what?

Answer: Sandwiches

The muffuletta bread originated in Sicily as a cheaper alternative to focaccia. The muffuletta sandwich originated in New Orleans by Italian immigrants. The sandwich is made from the bread which has been stuffed with cold cuts, vegetables and seasonings.

It was created because immigrants would often order these items and eat them separately, which proved difficult to carry and balance.
3. Melonpan is a kind of small roll that is not traditionally made with melons. It is only called that because it looks like a mini cantaloupe and tastes rather bland unless chocolate chips or syrup is added to it. From what nation does this bread originate?

Answer: Japan

Some people claim melonpan is more like a cookie than a bread. Although not traditionally made with melons, in recent years some bakers have added cantaloupe for whimsy and flavor since the bread is otherwise dry and tasteless.

Answer: Sweden

Tunnbrod can either be leavened or unleavened. The soft tunnbrod is utilized like a tortilla or wrap. The hard, crunchy tunnbrod is usually eaten like crackers. Tunnbrod recipes vary greatly across Sweden, even in the same region. The reason is that the any wheat and leavening agent can be used, given each baker's tunnbrod a different texture and taste.

Mjukkaka is also a flatbread more like a cakey tortilla than tunnbrod. Crispbread is a flat, bready cracker-type food. It was for many years the food of Swedish peasants.
