Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which fish has sharp teeth, lives around reefs, can reach 50 lbs and is a ferocious fighter, but tires out somewhat quickly?

Answer: Barracuda

Shark have sharp teeth but they don't tire as quickly as a big barracuda of the same weight. Jack don't have sharp teeth but still hold the record for the most rod breaking. And the only snapper big enough to to fit the bill is the cubera snapper which can grow over 100 lbs and won't tire out quickly.
2. You are fishing in a shipping channel with shrimp and you get a monster fish on and you see a red flash before your 20 pound line snaps. What fish is it?

Answer: Red Grouper

Redfish stick to the shallow waters. Red Snapper and Cubera stick to deeper waters but some smaller ones are caught near streams entering the ocean. Red Grouper can reach 40 lbs in shipping channels and near bridges.
3. You're fishing in 5ft grass flats. What are you most likely to catch?

Answer: Trout

Trout prefer deeper grass flats because the grass holds shrimp and pinfish while snapper need at least 15 feet of water to feed in and catfish aren't the most popular catch in grass flats but can sometimes be a pest.
4. Which of these fish prefers to feed in grass flats that are 1.5 ft deep?

Answer: Redfish

Redfish are commonly found in super shallow water tailing. Trout, Pinfish and Shad prefer deeper water.
5. Which is the largest snapper?

Answer: Cubera Snapper

The cubera snapper can grow over 120 pounds while the red, mangrove, and yellowtail snappers can only reach a maximum of 20-25 lbs.
6. When fishing off a reef with a pinfish you get a sudden super hard jerk and your line is sliced. What's the most common culprit?

Answer: Barracuda

It's quite interesting but barracuda strike the bait so quick you barely feel it unless you have a steel leader. Sharks just gobble your bait and slowly swim away. Cubera Snapper and Goliath Grouper do the same thing.
7. This marine animal can be found in 20 ft reefs but is more commonly found in 100s of feet. It has no bones and has a taste for chopped pinfish. Which one is it?

Answer: Squid

It seems weird but during a recent trip to the Keys we saw squid in a shallow reef. Swordfish are in water at least and have bones 200 ft and eels have bones and you can find them in shallow reefs and even 3ft water. The octopus lives in at least 50ft of water.
8. What fish is known as the silver king?

Answer: Tarpon

The tarpon is known as the silver king because of its very shiny scales and white sides which give it a silver look.
9. Which of these fish likes to take your bait then wrap your line around rocks?

Answer: Grouper

The grouper are the masters of taking your line into the rocks but if you release the tension from the line it will sometimes get the fish unsnagged.
Ladyfish shark and catfish just pull as hard as they can.
10. Which of these fish can you catch in grass flats, it takes little bites out of your shrimp; and is called a bait stealer?

Answer: Pinfish

Pinfish are most annoying when fishing for trout because they can clean your hook before the trout get it. Ballyhoo are not found in grass flats nor do they steal your bait. Small reds and trout aren't really bait stealers.
