Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most that participate in the sport of spearfishing would say that it is most like what?

Answer: Bow Hunting

Spear fishing shares many of its most attractive qualities with bow hunting. Both sports are gear intensive, and require vast knowledge of each part and piece to make the equipment useful. Both bow hunting and spear fishing reward patience, practice, judgment, and overall awareness.

In both sports, the participants must stalk game in camouflage, using stealth and environmental know-how to land the prey.
2. Why would an experienced underwater hunter often choose 'free-diving' over Scuba diving?

Answer: All these are valid reasons

An experienced spearfishing diver will often choose free diving over Scuba diving for many reasons. Most fish will become alerted and enter a cautious phase when they feel and hear the bubbles that are expelled from a Scuba divers regulator during the process of exhaling.

Another advantage that free divers hold over Scuba divers in the hunting world is in the fact that they can remain inīthe water for a long time without having to exit for bottle swaps or lengthy off gassing sessions. Its also true that both spearfishing and Scuba diving are gear intensive sports, and mixing these two sports will often result in a very encumbering experience to say the least. Above all the technical advantages, spear fisherman choose free-diving because of the challenge, achieving the mental and physical abilities to remain submerged underwater for minutes at a time without the aide of a breathing apparatus is sometimes more rewarding than landing a large fish.
3. One of the most dangerous elements in spearfishing is what?

Answer: Shallow water black-out

While all those are dangerous, but it is shallow water black-outs that claim more lives than anything else in the world of spearfishing. Shallow water black-out usually happens to practitioners that are experienced, in good shape and have been diving for many years. It is the fact that it can happen to anyone that makes it so dangerous.
4. When blue water hunting, divers will often 'chum' the water. This is done to do what?

Answer: Bring in game fish and distract them

Chum is a special concoction of fish parts and other sea food that is spread into the water around divers in hopes of attracting a game fish. Chum is sometimes used in conjunction with 'flashers', which is any object that is shiny and may get the attention of a fish.

The idea is to attract the fish with either the visual presence of the chum or the smell itself. Once the fish begin to come closer to investigate and/or feed on the chum, the diver can find an opportunity to dive down and line up a shot. Chum will almost always attract sharks and other sea creatures looking for a quick bite to eat, and while diving with sharks is sometimes nerve racking, it is something most blue water hunters have become accustomed too.
5. Spearfishing requires keen awareness and extensive knowledge of the underwater world. Different areas of the world require different skills. Why is this?

Answer: All listed

The temperature of the water can often be a clue to how 'fished' the area is as a basic rule of thumb. The warmer the ocean is, the smarter the fish are. Warmer waters see more hunters and fish are usually more aware of spearfishing danger. It is also true that every fish has its own characteristics and traits that need to be studied.

The advanced hunter can successfully predict these habits and use them to his or her advantage during the hunt. One of the biggest factors dealing with one's skill set, is the water's depth itself.

There is reef or shore diving (meaning the diver can see the bottom of the ocean), and there is also Blue Water Hunting (in which the diver cannot see the ocean floor), both presenting completely different situations and species of fish.
6. An avid spear fisherman is getting ready to jump in the water where there seems to be a school of Yellow Tailed Tuna feeding. He does a routine check over his gear. With this being a blue water dive, and tuna being the primary game fish, the diver should definitely have what?

Answer: Speargun, Float, Float line, Knife, Mask, Fins, Snorkle, and Weight

The minimum requirements of a typical blue water dive would be a speargun to shoot fish. One or more floats may be needed to keep your gear, and you, from being drug down into the depths by a powerful fish. Float line is a strong line, sometimes made with a bungee material that connects to the speargun butt and the float. Sometimes the float line is connected directly to the speargun's shaft.

A knife is used to dispatch the tuna, granted that you have not landed a 'stone' shot. A knife may also be useful in an emergency situation to free ones self from entangled gear. Mask, fins, snorkel, and weights are tools to help get an edge on an animal that naturally thrives in an environment that is alien to us.

A wet suit is very helpful too, but not totally necessary. Most divers won't dive without one though.
7. A one shot instant kill is referred to as a what?

Answer: Stone Shot

The term 'Stone Shot' is used to describe a shot in which the shaft either penetrates the brain of the fish or shatters the spine, instantly killing it in both situations. The fish once 'stoned' will sink the ocean floor, much like a stone itself.
8. When choosing a mask for spear fishing, it is advisable to choose one that is low volume, has a dull color, and is most importantly comfortable. Some masks have a dark, mirror tint on the glass. Why is this?

Answer: It doesn't allow fish to see your eyes

Some fish can recognize when a large predatory eye is watching them. They in turn relate this to a sign of being stalked and begin to act cautiously.
9. When persuading an octopus from its hole, a diver will use the tip of the spear gun or end of a pole sling (three prong) to gently prod the hole while lightly poking, tapping and pressing against the octopus. What is this called?

Answer: Tickling

By tickling the octopus out of its hole, the diver is usually able to grab the eight-legged animal and subdue it, either with a quick stab to the brain with a sharp knife, or a bite right between the eyes. Biting the animal between the eyes crushes its brain and kills it instantly. Octopus makes a great meal, appetizer, or fish bait.
10. Fish that are commonly shot while spear fishing include which of the following?

Answer: All these

Anything is possible and any and all fish that are legal to shoot are often shot. With so much variety in fish and spear fishing gear,it's not hard to see the limitless opportunities. Blue and black marlins are shot all the time, as well as dog tooth tuna, yellow and blue tuna, and hundreds of species of reef fish are good game.
