The Gunslinger Trivia Quiz

In my 'other life', I'm actually Fennek, a Drow-born Gunslinger in a "Pathfinder" role-playing campaign. He's a unique character specializing in the use of firearms in an otherwise fantasy-driven world. Do you know about his class? Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Gunslinger begins the game with which of the following class abilities, normally a feat designed for the use of unique weapons?

Answer: Exotic Weapon Proficiency

To begin the game, Gunslingers are always able to use simple weapons (typical one-handed melee weapons, slings, etc.) and martial weapons. In addition, and go figure, they're also adept with firearms, weapons typically classed under the Exotic Weapons heading. When you choose the class you're automatically able to take on proficiency with a firearm of your choice, improving your proficiency with Gun Training at every fourth level (beginning at 4).

If you're not a Gunslinger you must pick up the Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat to be able to utilize a firearm, otherwise you take major penalties to using the weapon (and can not use it or fix it at all when it's broken). Each type of firearm requires additional proficiency to be able to be used, so you have to pick up the feat more than once to use pistols and muskets, for instance.
2. A Gunslinger, when using his firearm, rolls a 1. What happens, provided they aren't a high enough level to protect against it?

Answer: It misfires

Rolling a 1 is typically a fumble, regardless of the character, and it usually has some rough ramifications when performed (anything from causing the character to fall over to taking accidental damage). When a firearm is shot, however, it has a misfire value, a value which, when rolled, will start to break the weapon.

When this happens, the misfire value increases by four and, if misfired again, it will give the weapon the broken condition and be rendered unusable until fixed. Most pistols have a misfire value of 1 while larger, two-handed firearms have a misfire value of 1 and 2. With Gun Training, a misfire will increase the value by two instead of four and, at a high enough level or with the proper archetype, it will no longer misfire.

A Gunslinger can fix a broken firearm with a deed, specifically Quick Clear.
3. Because the Gunslinger uses a firearm, what ability score is integral to the character's attack rolls?

Answer: Dexterity

Firearms are typically used as ranged weapons and, as such, require a good Dexterity modifier to effectively hit the target. The great thing is, however, that a firearm, when shot within the weapon's first range increment, will always strike an opponent's Touch Armor making close-range shots extremely effective. Beyond the first range increment however (and most firearms have five), the Gunslinger would need to shoot to hit the regular Armor value, and DEX is necessary to up your chances. Being up close will also require a bit of extra armor considering your proximity to the enemy, and a high DEX value will also help improve that aspect of your character.
4. Gunslingers utilize Grit Points to perform specific talents in battle (known as Deeds). What ability score affects the amount of Grit you receive?

Answer: Wisdom

Every Gunslinger, as part of their class, receives Grit Points equal to their Wisdom Ability Modifier (to a minimum of 1), and even so much as having a Grit Point in your possession can enable your character to use a number of useful Deeds, special abilities only usable by Gunslingers. Wisdom is the only modifier to affect these, but it is possible to up that value by making use of specific feats. Grit Points can be used in battle and can be regained either by resting overnight, performing a critical hit on an enemy, or by performing an attack on an enemy which reduces its health to 0 (unless it's helpless).

It is at the Dungeon Master's discretion whether or not there are other ways to earn back Grit Points.
5. Which of the following is not a Gunslinger Utility Shot?

Answer: Startling Shot

Amongst the interesting Deeds usable by the Gunslinger are the Utility Shots, gained at level three. These three actions can be performed provided the character has at least one Grit Point available (but they don't cost Grit to use). Blast Lock allows the Gunslinger to shoot and destroy locks of all sizes, Scoot Unattended Object allows the Gunslinger to move an object further away provided it's small enough, and Stop Bleeding allows for the cauterization of wounds, stopping the bleed condition. Startling Shot is a level seven Deed which, when fired, causes an enemy to become flat-footed for a round with a frightening, intentional near-miss. Again, the Deed does not cost Grit but requires one to be available.
6. The Pistol-Whip Deed allows a firearm to be used as a melee weapon.

Answer: True

By using one Grit Point, the Gunslinger can use his firearm, one or two-handed, to bludgeon an enemy. One-handed guns deal 1d6 physical damage while two-handed guns deal 1d10. In addition, should this be successful, there's a chance that the enemy can fall prone.

A Deed like this is best saved for special circumstances, especially since it's earned at level three and no earlier. In fact, at later levels, the damage will likely be negligible. It does, however, enable the gun to be used as both a melee weapon and a ranged weapon (at a bit of a cost).
7. Skill points placed into which Craft allow the Gunslinger to save money on ammunition?

Answer: Alchemy

Having any points in Craft: Alchemy will give your Gunslinger an important bonus. Since Gunslingers automatically receive the Gunsmithing Class Bonus, they are able to inherently create and maintain weapons and ammunition. As such, it does not become highly necessary to purchase all ammo (just like if a Ranger also had Craft: Fletching for arrows). With powder, bullets, or casing, ammo can go a long way. You will, in addition, end up saving 90% by crafting regular ammo and 50% on crafting cartridges. There are no Crafting checks for this-- provided you have any time during the day you are considered to have used it to create your ammunition.
8. Starting at level 2, the Gunslinger receives a class bonus known as Nimble, giving a bonus to which of the following?

Answer: Armor class

Nimble grants the Gunslinger some much-needed Dodge Bonus, improving what could otherwise be a low Armor value with lesser Light Armor. Although Dodge does not factor into the character's Flat-Footed Armor Check, it does contribute to regular and Touch Armor values.

At level 2, the bonus is +1, but every four levels after the first, the value scales up by an additional +1. This Class Bonus only works if the Gunslinger is, indeed, wearing Light Armor or none at all, and it's especially useful when the player is within the first range increment of their weapon, risking hits on every turn.
9. Which of the following Combat Feats would directly influence a Gunslinger's actions in combat?

Answer: Rapid Reload

Rapid Reload is really the only one with relevance here-- the feat, which works with any ranged weapon using ammunition, improves your ability to reload, reducing full actions to standard actions, standard actions to move actions, and move actions to free actions. One-handed firearms, thus, use move actions to reload while two-handed firearms use standard actions to reload.

This becomes all-the-more interesting when you use guns with multiple barrels/chambers, and if/when your Gunslinger receives the Lightning Reload ability at level 11. Ki Throw is used by Monks, Dispelling Critical is used by casters, and Spiked Destroyer is quite unlikely to be of use for a Gunslinger since you require spiked armor as a prerequisite and it makes use of bull-rushing.
10. Gunslingers can possess many items which other characters would find no use for. Which of these would be of great use to a Gunslinger looking to carry ammunition?

Answer: Powder Horn

Powder Horns are of particular use since they hold a Gunslinger's black powder, necessary for creating certain ammunition types. Should the powder get wet (if the Gunslinger is forced to go for an impromptu swim, for instance) it becomes useless and, in effect, renders the Gunslinger unable to create more ammo (which can be crippling). Quivers are used by archers (since they contain arrows) while Spell Component Pouches are useful containers containing a large amount of magical goods needed to perform specific magic spells. Cigar Cases are simple bric-a-brac and, on occasion, when jeweled, can be sold for a fair amount.
