Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Could I recommend the fried chicken? It's hard to beat. It's a heck of a lot better than the stuff they serve over at Kentucky Fried Chicken. Which of these is NOT an urban legend that has attached itself to Kentucky Fried Chicken?

Answer: 11 herbs and spices? Try two: salt and pepper.

The Kentucky Fried Rat is an old standby. Johnny Carson once mentioned it on "The Tonight Show" (though avoided mentioning KFC). There is no proof it ever happened.

A lot of people tend to associate Southern colonels with slavery, hence the KKK rumor. It is also not true. Sanders was in the army, put as a private. He died in 1980 at the age of 90.

According to the KFC legend, the animals they serve are so modified they no longer have beaks or feet. In reality, they were trying to get rid of the unhealthy word 'fried' in their name.
2. How about a nice burger? We use only the finest beef. Not like McDonalds, I hate to mention what they put in their burgers. Which of these unappetizing ingredients is NOT part of a false McDonalds rumor?

Answer: Used bubblegum

In the mid-eighties, rumors persisted that McDonalds burgers contained everything from kangaroos, to worms, to spider eggs. Remember the '100% pure beef' commercials? They were in response to these rumors. The rumormongers were undeterred. They simply accused McDonalds of putting cow eyeballs in the food (cow parts are cow parts, after all).
3. Anyone remember Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy's? He was the grandfatherly man in the commercials. Of course, he had a dark secret (if you believed the rumors). What was he supposedly hiding?

Answer: He was in the Ohio National Guard and was the first to open fire on the protesters at Kent State.

For some reason the Kent State story stuck to the late founder of Wendy's, but it is untrue. Dave Thomas, who died in 2002, was a high school drop-out who made it big.
4. Anything to drink? How about a nice Dr Pepper? Or maybe not. What secret ingredient does Dr Pepper allegedly contain?

Answer: Prune juice

This is a classic schoolyard rumor. Dr Pepper denies it, but can we trust them?
5. According to one rumor, what did someone find at the bottom of a bottle of Coke?

Answer: A dead mouse

This rumor has stuck to Coke, but has also been told about other sodas, beers, and sauces. It never happened. This was the theme of the movie 'Strange Brew,' where the Mackenzie Brothers attempt to get a free case of beer by claiming they found a mouse in their drink.
6. All this food talk reminds me of a story my great-grandmother told about the old country. Seems when she was still living in Europe, her family received a package from an American relative. The package contained an amazing powder which they used to flavor their food. It wasn't until later that they realized what the powder really was. What was it,supposedly?

Answer: Their grandmother's ashes

It seems the grandmother passed on in America, and her son sent her ashes home for burial. His explanatory letter was delayed, and the European family mistook the ashes for American spices.

This rumor picked up steam after World War II. Americans would send European relatives food parcels. Europeans were often unfamiliar with American powdered or instant food, which led to the misunderstanding. Of course, this probably never happened.
7. How about a nice sandwich? I won't mention names, but a certain American fast food chain serves 'meat' that comes in a gel form. It hardens when they cook it. It is then sliced and passed off as real beef. What restaurant is the subject of this rumor?

Answer: Arby's

Arby's roast beef arrives at the restaurant in a plastic bag filled with a gelatinous broth, which may have started the liquid meat rumor. Unless you're an astronaut, you've probably never had a liquid meat sandwich.
8. Would you like something from the bar? We have over 50 domestic beers. Sorry, no foreign labels. In fact, a certain Mexican beer contains urine! The brewery workers urinate in the vats! What Mexican beer was hurt by this rumor?

Answer: Corona

In 1987, the rumor that Corona contained urine caused sales to drop off. While the company managed to find the rumor's source (a Heineken distributor, no less), they've never been able to totally put the rumor to rest.
9. Something for dessert? Just watch what you eat. Little Mikey from the LIFE cereal commercial died from eating Pop Rocks with what?

Answer: Coke (or Pepsi)

According to the famous rumor, the combination caused too much carbon dioxide to build up in his system and his stomach exploded. In reality, Mikey (John Gilchrist) survived until adulthood. This legend was parodied in an episode of "The Simpsons", when Homer creates a bomb out of a bag of Pop Rocks and a can of cola.
10. According to rumor, what do the little 'U' or 'K' symbols on food packages mean?

Answer: The secret Jewish tax on the food has been paid, and the costs have been passed along to you, the customer.

The 'K' and 'U' symbols mean that the food has been deemed kosher, or prepared in an acceptable manner under rabbinical law. Do rabbis charge a fee to inspect the preparation process? Yes. Does this fee raise the cost of your food? No, it is offset by the additional Jewish business it brings in. Still, some people maintain that up to 25% of the cost of food is used to pay the Kosher Nostra racket. Sorry folks, not true.
