Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Three of the following are tokens in the original version of Monopoly. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Skateboard

Other tokens include a battleship, a man riding a horse, a cannon, a boot, an iron and a top hat. Various editions of the game issued special tokens, among them a wheelbarrow, locomotive, bag of money and koala. I can only assume that, like mine, every family would fight about who got the "cool" tokens (race car, battleship, horse and dog) and who ended up with the iron.
2. Three of these letters are worth 8 points or more in Scrabble (English version). Which is the odd one out?

Answer: V

The highest scoring letters are "Q" and "Z", each worth 10 points; and "J" and "X", worth 8 points. The letter "V" is one of five unique tiles worth 4 points. The value of letters is roughly in inverse proportionality to their frequency of use in the language. For example, in Polish Scrabble "Z" is worth a single point.
3. Three of these are resources you might receive in "The Settlers of Catan". Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Aluminium

"The Settlers of Catan" is a board game created by the German designer Klaus Teuber. Players compete to build settlements, cities and roads, and to do so they need to collect and trade resources. The game won the prestigious Spiel des Jahres ("Game of the Year" in German) in 1995 and has had multiple expansion versions released. I love this game, but you should be aware that I have been accused of some nerdy tendencies in the past.
4. Three of these are territories in the original game of "Risk". Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Mexico

The standard version of Risk divides the world into 42 territories across 6 continents. Some of the territories are equivalent to whole countries--such as Indonesia, Japan, Congo, Egypt, Ukraine and Argentine. Others represent groups of countries--such as Scandinavia, North Africa, Middle East and Southern Europe.

A third type of territory are those that are part of a large country split into multiple territories--such as Eastern and Western Australia; Alaska, Eastern and Western United States; and Irkutsk, Yakutsk, Siberia and Ural.

It's a good game for learning your basic world geography!
5. Three of these games are played using tiles. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Hangman

Tiles are pieces of card, wood, stone, plastic or other material with a face side and a blank underside. They may constitute the playing board itself and can be any shape: commonly rectangular or square, but some games use tiles shaped like hexagons, triangles, arrows or irregular polygons.

Games using dominoes are the best known type of tile games. Dominoes originated in China in the 12th century before a modified version appeared in Italy in the 18th century.
6. Three of these are hands in poker. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Shooting the Moon

Poker is often considered a group of card games rather than a single game, as there are so many variants.

Modern poker arose in America in the 19th century. Online and televised games as well as high profile international tournaments have renewed interest in the game in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
7. Three of these games are played using cards. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Tiddlywinks

The first playing cards originated in China over a thousand years ago. By the 15th century they had spread to Europe and the familiar division of a deck into four suits with numbered and court cards had developed. Dozens of different games can be played with a standard deck of playing cards, both solitary and multi-player games.

More recently, games have been developed that use their own specially printed decks (for example, Uno), and many board games use cards among other pieces of equipment.
8. Three of these games use dice. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Baccarat

Using dice, checkers and a special board, the origins of backgammon date back 5,000 years making it one of the oldest games still popular today. Craps is a simple game in which players gamble on the outcome of a roll of dice. It evolved from an Old English game known as hazard. Yahtzee is a much more recent invention, first made available in the 1950s.

Baccarat is a casino game (a favourite of James Bond) that uses playing cards--but no dice.
9. A good vocabulary will help you do well in three of these games. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Knucklebones

Scrabble and Boggle both require players to construct words from a random selection of letters. In Scattergories, the objective is to list items within a given category that begin with a particular letter.

On the other hand, knucklebones (also known as jacks) requires good reflexes and manual dexterity but no words at all. Except perhaps "oh no, missed again!"
10. Three of these are popular role-playing games. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Diplomacy

Role playing games (RPGs) may take the form of tabletop games, video or online games or live action games. Players take on the roles of various characters and progress through a story, making decisions, acquiring possessions and attributes and solving challenges.

While many RPGs involve anywhere from several to hundreds of players, some single-player video games also fall under the RPG heading.
