quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with something from "Rent," the song that is. Finish the lyrics. "How do you leave the past behind..."

Answer: when it keeps finding ways to get to your heart

This was always my favorite line in this song. "Rent" the song is the first major musical number in the show and it really grabs the audience in, gets them interested. I remember watching the first song and going "Wow, I'm going to love this!"
2. Who did Benny marry?

Answer: Allison Grey

Benny is married to Allison Grey, of the Westport Greys, whom we never see. It is clear that the other characters, especially Maureen (you can tell during "Over the Moon") disagree with Benny's choice. They feel he gave up his principles and married wealth.
3. What college expelled Collins for his theory of "Actual Reality"?

Answer: MIT

When Collins enters at the beginning of "Today 4 U", Mark refers to Collins as "Tom Collins, computer genius, teacher, vagabond anarchist, who ran naked through the Parthenon." It's clear that Collins is a genius in disguise, who happens to be gay!
4. Fill in these lyrics from "One Song Glory." "One song, He had the world at his feet. Glory, In the eyes of a young girl,A young girl. Find glory..."

Answer: Beyond the cheap colored lights

This song is so brilliant and sad at the same time. It's really a song about Jonathan Larson's life, his struggles as a musician. In the OBC, Adam Pascal does a great job of portraying the young boy hoping to write a great song before he dies.
5. Who is the famous director said to be "shooting down the street" in "Light My Candle"?

Answer: Spike Lee

Spike Lee is a very controversial director who uses a lot of elaborate lights and sounds. When Mimi says that that they have no light, Roger replies "I hear Spike Lee's shooting down the street." He jokes that his stage lights are enough to light up their apartments.
6. How much did that rich lady pay Angel to kill her neighbor's dog in "Today 4 U"?

Answer: $1,000

"A thousand dollar gaurentee, tax-free, and a bonus, if you trim my tree". Angel is quick to share his money with his new guy and friends, showing what a nice person he is. You later find out that the dog Angel killed was Benny's!
7. Where does Mark says he learned to tango during "Tango: Maureen"?

Answer: Scarsdale Jewish Community Center

Joanne learned to dance with the French Ambassador's daughter in her dorm room at Miss Porter's. Mark and Joanne are so different and yet they have one thing in common, they both dated or are dating Maureen, who drives them nuts!
8. Finish these "Another Day" lyrics. "Excuse me if I'm off track, but if you're so wise, then tell me...."

Answer: why do you need smack?

Roger gets annoyed when Mimi comes off as so wise about living each day full, so he asks her why she needs drugs. This is my favorite song in the show, especially the part at the end when what Roger and Mimi say completly contradicts the other. "Come back another day" "No day but today".
9. In "Christmas Bells" a coat vender tries to sell Angel and Collins a fur coat. Who does she say used to own it?

Answer: an MBA

It's Christmas and Angel wants to buy Collins a new coat. Just another example of how he is sharing his money and love with his new guy. There are so many instances where you see what an incredible person Angel is. As it says on the back of Roger's jacket, "Only the Good Die Young".

Vendor #2 sings about the fur coat: "How about a fur - in perfect shape, owned by an MBA from Uptown?" The vendor also sings about a coat owned by "a greedy broker," but that coat is a tweed, not a fur.
10. Finish these lyrics from Maureen's performance of "Over the Moon": "It's like I'm being tied to the hood of a yellow rental truck, packed in with fertilizer, and fuel oil, pushed over a cliff by..."

Answer: a suicidal Mickey Mouse

I love Maureen's performance. It's supposed to make her seem so crazy but I think it's true genius! In the OBC album, Idina Menzel does an incredible job of playing the total girl power Maureen!
11. What is the name of the cow that Maureen meets in her dream during her "Over the Moon" performance?

Answer: Elsie

Elsie the cow is the one who helps Maureen jump "Over the Moon". Once again, I find this whole song to be brilliant. A very creative way of expressing Maureen's opinion on what's going on in her life.
12. Finish these lyrics from "La Vie Boheme": "To loving tension, no pension, To more than one dimension, To starving for attention, Hating convention, hating pretension, Not to mention of course, hating..."

Answer: dear old mom and dad

I believe that "La Vie Boheme" is the most brilliant song in the show. It's a song where Jonathan Larson paid tribute to everything he loved in life and he used his characters to portray that. Jonathan Larson's life struggles and loves can be seen in every song and every character.
13. From "Seasons of Love": "It's time now--to sing out, Tho' the story never ends, Let's celebrate, Remember a year in..."

Answer: the life of friends

It' so nice to think of a year or anytime at all in the "life of friends". This song tells you all the ways you can measure your life. A life can be measured by time, friends, and most of all, the impact you leave on others, something Jonathan Larson certainly accomplished.
14. In "Happy New Year," what does Mimi say she's "giving up and going back to school"?

Answer: her vices

This is perfect example of the effect that Roger and Mimi's relationship has had on the two characters. During "Happy New Year," the characters talk of making a new start and leaving old habits behind.
15. Finish these lyrics from "Take Me or Leave Me": "A tiger in a cage, Can never see the sun, This diva needs..."

Answer: her stage

If you want a true women power song, this is it! Maureen and Joanne are just too different to be a couple. Maureen is a free spirit and Joanne is a tight "control freak." They will later realize that their love is strong enough to overcome their differences.
16. In "Without You", Roger and Mimi discuss what goes on when they're not together. Finish these lyrics. "The mind churns, The heart yearns, The tears dry, Without you, Life goes on, But I'm gone, Cause'--------without you"

Answer: I die

This is a beautiful love song! Mimi and Roger have just had a bad fight but when they realize how much they mean to each other, they make up. As Mimi and Roger make up, you see Angel growing weaker and eventually dying. As one couple makes up, another is torn apart.
17. In "Goodbye Love", as everyone is fighting after Angel's funeral, Collins offers some words of wisdom. Complete these lyrics: "I can't believe he's gone, I can't believe you're going, I can't believe..."

Answer: this family must die

Angel's death causes some people to re-examine their relationships. By the end of the song, Maureen and Joanne are back together, but Mimi leaves with Benny. You know that's not the end for Roger and Mimi, their love is so stong it can survive anything.
18. Complete these lyrics from "What You Own." "You're living in America, At the end of the millennium. You're living in America, Leave your conscience at the tone. And when you're living in America, At the end of the millennium, You're..."

Answer: what you own

This song relfects on how cold the world can be when you have no one to love you. Mark and Roger reflect on their lives, their choices, good and bad. By the end of the song, Mark has quit his job to work on his own work and Roger vows to find Mimi.
19. What is the name of theme played throughout the show as Roger's attempt at a song? It is finally played correctly in "Your Eyes".

Answer: Musetta's Waltz

This theme on the guitar is subtle tribute to "La Boheme," the opera that "Rent" is based on. Musetta is the character from the opera portrayed as Maureen in "Rent" and her waltz is famous. When played correctly as in the end of "Your Eyes," it is a passionate and beautiful melody.
20. What is the well-known theme in "Rent," spoken very often, especially in the Finale?

Answer: no day but today

This brilliant theme of living each day like it really matters is said throughout the play. It's a philosophy that not only AIDS patients should live by, but everyone. Life is short and everyday should be lived to its fullest. Their truly is "No Day But Today".
