Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a recumbent sculpture, often found on top of a coffin, called?

Answer: gisant

Gisant figures are very common throughout Europe. Just look at the tombs of the wealthy and important figures of medieval Europe and you are likely to see a stone gisant figure lying atop the coffins. For more information on art terms, please see my art terms quizzes in the art sub-section of the Humanities category. There is a 'g' terms quiz included!
2. What word comes from the Hebrew word 'ganav', meaning 'rascally foolish'?

Answer: gnoff

In English, we would probably use the terms 'goofy' or 'fatuous' as a synonym for 'gnoff'.
3. What word, from the French, describes the collection of deeds performed by a hero?

Answer: geste

The Chansons de Geste were songs of late medieval France celebrating the heroic deeds of great men in epic form. The most famous of these was the Chanson de Rolando (or Song of Roland). You can see my quiz on this subject for more details about such works of literature.
4. What type of people were the Gesellschaftslied?

Answer: middle-class

'Gesellschaft' was a term oft used by German social scientist Max Weber. Its opposite term was 'Gemeinschaft'. Gesellschaft refers to impersonal relations in society, while Gemeinschaft refers to family or close personal ties.
5. Which of the following items can be described as a ganache?

Answer: chocolate filling

A ganache is a wonderful French treat, a whipped chocolate filling used in cakes, for example. Thank you for playing this quiz, I hope you enjoyed it and will try some of my other stuff!
