Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A reddish brown sweetening spice; a reddish brown color.

Answer: cinnamon

Cinnamons are tasty and sweet! Even though cinnamon is a spice, I don't consider it spicy. There are several foods that are cinnamon-flavored, like cinnamon crackers, cinnamon cookies, Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal, cinnamon bread, and cinnamon waffles. Cinnamon comes from the inner bark of various Asian trees, exclusively from the genus Cinnamomum.
2. A genus of South American trees that contains quinine.

Answer: cinchona

Cinchona, or quina, is a genus of trees, native to East Andes region of South America in Peru and Bolivia, but it can also grow in Central America, Jamaica, French Polynesia, Indonesia, India, and parts of Africa. Quinine, found in the barks of cinchonas, is used to treat malaria.
3. Another name for the organic compound eucalyptol.

Answer: cineole

Cineole is the less common name for eucalyptol. It is an oily liquid ether that has a pleasant, camphor-like odor and a spicy taste that originates from essential oils, like eucalyptus and cajeput. Because of its aroma and spiciness, it is used in fragrances, mouthwash, cough suppressor, cosmetics, flavorings, insecticides and bug spray.
4. A flowering plant of the rose family that produces an inedible fruit.

Answer: cinquefoil

Cinquefoil produces "barren strawberries" that cannot be eaten. Most of its flowers are yellow, while few others are red, white, or pink. Because cinquefoil usually has five leaves in each plant as well as five petals in each flower, the term comes from the Old French cinc, Middle English cink, and Latin quinque - all meaning "five" - and foil/foille meaning "leaf".

The scientific name for cinquefoil is potentilla though.
5. A five-line stanza.

Answer: cinquain

Cinquain also applies to any five-line forms in general, like verses in song lyrics. Cinquain originated from the French word cinq, meaning "five", and Old French word quatrain, from quatre, meaning "four". There may be a good reason why four is involved in the origin of the word for a set of five. I think it's because four-line stanza, called quatrain, is the most original and classic form. Five-line stanza came later and invented the term for that based from quatrain.
6. A girth; a secure grip; an easy task; an upcoming sure event.

Answer: cinch

Flipping a light switch is a cinch. Even saying the word 'cinch' is a cinch! I'm a cinch to watch the new episode of my favorite show. The rope must be cinched at both ends before walking on the rope across the canyon. A cinch is used to keep the saddle firmly on horses to ensure a safe and comfy horse ride.
7. A movie theater.

Answer: cinema

There are few derivatives of cinema, like cinematic (of or related to a movie) and cinematographer (a person who films). There are several names that begin with 'cinema' as well, such as Cinemax, which is a television network that broadcasts featured films being played in the theaters, and Cinemark, which is a movie theater chain.

Cine is a rare alternative form of cinema, and it also means a film or movie. Would you like to watch a cine tonight?
8. A belt or girdle; to surround something.

Answer: cincture

Cincture comes from the Latin word cinctura, meaning "girdle", from cinctus, past participle of cingere, meaning "to surround or encircle". Its word origin is related to cinch, which originated from cingere.

I cincture my pants to keep it from falling down as I walk. The SWAT team cincture an apartment to capture a fugitive.
9. A mercury ore.

Answer: cinnabar

Cinnabar is a soft mineral, made exclusively of mercury sulfide. Its color ranges from brick red to scarlet. The optical properties and symmetry for the mineral resembles that of quartz. Cinnabar is the most common mercury ore.
10. A small lump of ash; a rock.

Answer: cinder

Cinders are partially burnt ashes that are commonly seen in fireplaces. Cinder is also an igneous rock similar to pumice.
