Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character calls out like a coo-coo bird?

Answer: Yellow Feather

Throughout the play, Little Mary is always talking about her little coo-coo bird that lives in the nearby tree. Near the end of the play, Yellow Feather, who has come to "have his way" with Little Mary, hides behind the tree when she comes out of her inn to sing to her bird. When she starts her song, he chimes in with extra coo-coos.
2. Finish this quote: Little Mary: "Oh, Captain Jim, a Forest Ranger is truly a man." Captain Jim: "Yes, Little Mary, ___ ___."

Answer: he is

After Captain Jim saves Little Mary from Yellow Feather at the end of the play, they reprise their love song and Little Mary makes this declaration. When Captain Jim's line is delivered with the utmost seriousness, it's absolutely hilarious. Right after this line, all the other Forest Rangers come back from their dangerous mission, making all the Young Ladies from Eastchester Finishing School very happy.
3. One group of characters in this play is "a bevy of young ladies" (as Billy Jester calls them). What school do these girls attend?

Answer: Eastchester Finishing School

Many, many times throughout the play the girls make it known that they are Young Ladies from Eastchester Finishing School. This comes up in their first song, "Playing Croquet," and in plenty of lines after this.
4. Finish the quote: "Tell a handsome stranger, are you pretty or a ___ ___?"

Answer: homely maid

"Tell a Handsome Stranger" is one of the funniest songs in the play. The Forest Rangers can't decide if the young ladies are "as beautiful and as lovely as [they] seem, or if [they] are, on the whole, rather plain." They ask if they are homely, which offends the girls, but a very short moment later the girls admit they're pretty, and everyone immediately falls in love.
5. General Fairfax and Madame Ernestine never knew each other in Vienna.

Answer: True

General Oscar Fairfax and Madame Ernestine von Liebedich both reminisce about their time in Vienna, but realize, sadly, that though they were there at the same time, they never knew each other. They sing a sweet duet called "Have You Ever Dreamed of Vienna?" It is a nice moment for their romantic subplot.
6. What is the name of Chief Brown Bear's Indian tribe?

Answer: Kadota Indians

Brown Bear, Yellow Feather, and Fleet Foot are all Kadota Indians. When Brown Bear adopts Billy Jester as his new son, he inducts him into the tribe. At first, Billy thinks the tribe name is Dakota, but Brown Bear corrects him, and Billy agrees that Kadota sounds better.
7. How did Little Mary make the money she used to buy the Colorado Inn?

Answer: she sold homemade cookies

Toward the beginning of the show, it is revealed that the bank is about to foreclose on the Colorado Inn, which the Forest Rangers are sure is causing Little Mary a lot of heartache. While questioning her about this, Billy Jester asks her if it is true that she earned the money to buy the Inn from selling her homemade cookies, and she replies that it certainly is.
8. Finish the quote: "You are my once in a ___ ___ girl."

Answer: blue moon

Billy Jester and Little Mary's maid, Naughty Nancy, have had an on-again, off-again relationship for a while. Nancy is a terrible flirt, and Billy is getting tired of it. They have a song called "Once in a Blue Moon," where he confronts her about her flirting, but then realizes he loves her anyway, calling her his "once in a blue moon girl."
9. Little Mary was raised by Indians.

Answer: True

At the beginning of the play, Captain Jim explains to Little Mary that he must go on a dangerous mission to find the leader of a notorious band of Indians. His guide, Fleet Foot, is from the Kadota tribe. At the mention of Fleet Foot's name, Little Mary excitedly explains that when she was berry picking as a child, she became lost. Fleet Foot found her and took her to Brown Bear, who raised her as his own.
10. What famous spy is Nancy trying to imitate when she dresses up in a disguise that "disguises the disguise she's going to have on underneath"?

Answer: Mata Hari

Nancy ultimately disguises herself as an Indian so she can go help Billy catch Yellow Feather, but first she disguises herself as someone "mysterious," "seductive," and "beautiful." When asked by the young ladies who she's disguised as, she explains that she's just disguising her real (Indian) disguise.

The ladies are confused, but Nancy explains that that's how Mata Hari did it. They all sing "Mata Hari," and the girls end up wishing they could all be like that famous spy.
