Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I was the actor who played Simba. I sang "Endless Night" mainly by myself. Who am I?

Answer: Jason Raize

In some parts of the chorus, Simba/Raize was joined also by the ensemble of singers.

"I know that the night must end
And that the sun will rise
And that the sun will rise
I know that the clouds must clear
And that the sun will shine
And that the sun will shine."
2. I am Simba's best friend. Together, we explored an elephant graveyard. Who am I (think: in that specific moment, was Nala a kid or full grown?) and who played me in the original Broadway show?

Answer: Young Nala, played by Kajuana Shuford

Kajuana has also played roles as Gale in "Funny Valentine", and a guest appearance in "The Cosby Show". Kajuana sang along with Young Simba and Zazu in "I Just Can't Wait to be King".
3. My name is Tsidii Le Loka. My character was old and wise, and also had many vocal parts in the songs. Who was my character?

Answer: Rafiki

Tsidii was the only lead performer to be involved in the creative process of the musical. As Rafiki, she sang "Circle of Life", "Rafiki Mourns", "Shadowland", "He Lives You (Reprise)", and "King of Pride Rock".
4. My name is Scar. The actor who originated me was born in California, and played Rusot in "Star Trek". What is his name?

Answer: John Vickery

As you probably know, Scar is the villain of the play. Scar sings "Be Prepared" and "The Madness of King Scar".
5. I am a unique species in this play. I was played by Geoff Hoyle, and Simba didn't like me much as a kid. Who I am, and what type of animal am I?

Answer: Zazu, Hornbill

The actor playing Zazu has a very interesting costume. They carry around a hornbill puppet which they animate with string hanging from its mouth. Their costume is an outrageous suit (it has been in blue and purple), a bowler of the same color as the suit, and extensive face makeup.
6. What kind of costume did Max Casella use in the original Broadway "Lion King"?

Answer: He only used a puppet

Max Casella played Timon the meerkat. His Timon puppet was particularly hard to master, because the use of it put a strain on his arms, back, and neck. Timon sings in "Hakuna Matata", "Can You Feel the Love Tonight", and "The King of Pride Rock".
7. I am a strong female character. I leave my home after it becomes a barren wasteland and the new king tries to flirt with me. Who am I, and who played me in the original Broadway show?

Answer: Nala, played by Heather Headley

Scar flirts with Nala and tells her she will be his queen in "The Madness of King Scar". Nala then sings a heartbreakingly beautiful song, "Shadowland".

"Fatshe leso lea halalela
Fatshe leso lea halalela
Fatshe leso lea halalela

And where the journey may lead you
Let this prayer be your guide
Though it may take you so far away
Always remember your pride

And where the journey may lead you Giza buyabo, giza buyabo
Let this prayer be your guide I will return, I will return
Beso bo
Though it may take you so far away Giza buyabo, I will return
Always remember your pride Giza buyabo, oh giza buyabo

Beso bo, my people, beso bo."
8. Scott Irby-Ranniar played which character, who looks forward to being the future ruler of the Pridelands?

Answer: Young Simba

Young Simba gets more stage time than any other character- and he's one of the youngest! Along with Young Nala, he is one of the only child actors.
9. This creature sings "Hakuna Matata" along with his friend. What is the name of this character whom Tom Alan Robbins played, and what type of animal is he?

Answer: Pumbaa, Warthog

Pumbaa also sings "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and "King of Pride Rock" along with Timon.
10. Which actors played the three hyenas? List them in this order: Shenzi, Banzai, Ed.

Answer: Tracy Nicole Chapman, Stanley Wayne Mathis, Kevin Cahoon

These three fiendish hyenas get a song all to themselves, in the song titled "Chow Down". This song was in rock style, as opposed to the other traditional African or show-tuney songs in the play.
