Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which word or phrase below means 'a considerable amount'?

Answer: a lot

If you want to visit a town in India, then that town could be Alot. If you assign a portion, as in time, then allot that time. However, if you have a large number of something, like allotted time in a Alot, India, then that would be 'a lot'.

Get it? Got it. Good!
2. If you wanted to say that you are going to give an example without using that word, which of the following abbreviations would you use?

Answer: e.g.

I.e. and e.g. get misused often. E.g. stands for 'exempli gratia' and means 'for example'. I have several favorite Fun Trivia categories (e.g. Movies, Television, and Music). I.e. stands for 'id est' and means 'that is' or 'in other words'. I have several favorite Fun Trivia categories (i.e. I'm sucking up to the editors by mentioning FT a lot). Etc. is an abbreviation for 'et cetera' and means 'and so on' or 'and others'. Et al. is the abbreviation of et alia and means 'and others'.
3. Ten people were sitting in the jury room, talking about the trial. The conversations were getting off track and heated. The foreman stood up and said "We don't need to conversate about this any more. Let's vote." Did the foreman just make a huge faux pas, did he just make up a word?

Answer: No

Believe it or not, the word 'conversate' was in two of the three sources I used. It's listed as nonstandard and is not readily accepted as proper but it is a word. Most feel the word came into being in the 1970's by dropping the 'ion' from conversation but since the word converse already existed, there really wasn't a reason or need to invent a word. According to Dictionary.com, 'conversate' is used mostly by ethnic groups.

Well, I can stop cringing when I hear it. I think it is around to stay.
4. The following four words all look very similar but the meanings are quite different. Which word means grim or formidable?

Answer: grisly

Something grim or causing horror is grisly, like almost every scene in every 'Saw' movie. There are grizzly bears and showing age by having gray or white hair can be considered grizzly. The chewy piece of cartilage or fat that you just had to spit out is gristle! A batch of grain to be ground is grist for the mill.

All the words look and sort of sound alike but have different meanings. Use them, just be sure to use them correctly.
5. After you have written the term paper, the one that will determine your grade for the semester, you should _______ the paper very carefully.

Answer: any of these words would be appropriate

Any of these words would be acceptable. Examine can mean to check carefully, to interrogate, to test, to inquire or investigate. Examining closely and in minute detail would be to scrutinize. Peruse also means to survey or examine or read in detail.

People tend to use peruse as a synonym for reading over lightly or confuse it with pursue.
6. Which word or abbreviation means the same as 'all right'?

Answer: Each answer is acceptable

OK, o.k., and okay are all ok! OK is an abbreviation for 'oll korrect', meaning 'all correct'. It can be spelled in all caps, with or without periods, or spelled with a 'd, 'ed, 'ing, 's or ay at the end. It's quite a flexible little word.
7. Agenda (lists of things to do) is the plural spelling of agendum. Media (means of communication) is the plural spelling of medium. Data (facts, statistics, information) is the plural spelling of _________.

Answer: datum

Data is the plural form of datum but data is also considered as a single mass by certain professions like scientists or in computer science. I gave the hint of five letters in the word so there wouldn't be any confusion.

"The data collected on ten wrong people are interesting" is a correct use. "The data collected on ten wrong people is interesting" is also a correct use. One may sound wrong, but both are correct.
8. All though I wasn't through with my coffee, when I saw the man with the gun I threw down my cup, ran thru the bank door, threw up my hands, and the robber shot me through and through. Besides being long and run on, is there anything wrong with this sentence?

Answer: There is one error in the sentence

The first words are incorrect. All though should be although, which means even though or in spite of.

Thru, through, and threw are occasionally used incorrectly. Threw is the past tense of throw, which means to hurl or fling with force. Through can be a preposition, adjective, or adverb and means to enter on one side and exit on the other side, end, or surface. It can mean a completed process or action. Through and through means from beginning to end, or in medical jargon, it is something that enters the body on one side and exits on the other side. Thru is a variant form of through, an alternative and simplified spelling of through going as far back as 1800's, and is an informal but acceptable form of that word.
9. 1. The quick brown fox was spotted in the Patagonian Desert. 2. The quick brown fox jumped over the creme brulee desert. 3. The quick brown fox would never desert her baby quick brown foxes. Which sentence is wrong?

Answer: number 2

Desert, dessert, and desert are easily confused. With the emphasis on the first syllable, and only one 's', you have a region with little or no water or vegetation and usually lots of sand or ice. With the emphasis on the second syllable, (and still only one 's'), you're leaving or running away. Someone who deserts could be considered AWOL (absent without leave). Dessert is usually served at the end of a meal and is eatable and edible, scrumptious but not sumptuous, and rich but not wealthy.
10. There are several ways to get information on this site. You can read through chat boards, ask friends and teammates, or read through various discussion __________. Which word should be used to complete the previous sentence?

Answer: both are correct

Forums and fora are plural of forum, athough fora is not used as much. A forum in original form was a place in ancient Rome. It has evolved to be a meeting place, a way to discuss questions of interest, a court or tribunal, or any public meeting where the audience is invited to participate in the discussion.
