Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hestia welcomes her first guest onto the show. This woman clearly thinks a lot of herself as she remarks, "when you look this good, you can't just have one man". Indeed, this woman is here to come clean about her cheating ways, saying that "she just can't resist a bad boy", and who can be badder than the god of war? Who is this cheating goddess?

Answer: Aphrodite

Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty, was given as a gift to the crippled god of craftsmen, Hephaestus. Hephaestus learned of the affair between his wife and the god of war, Ares, and trapped them in a net before shaming them in front of the other gods.
2. This next woman immediately gains the sympathy of the crowd as she explains that her husband ran away with another woman. As her estranged husband marches onto the set, the sympathy for this woman changes to hostility, as he explains that this woman killed his uncle, Pelius, as well as her own brother, Absyrtus. Which female figure of Greek mythology is being described here?

Answer: Medea

This sorceress used her powers to help her husband, Jason, in his quest for the Golden Fleece, but her love grew to the extent that she killed Jason's uncle and even her own brother in order to help her husband. After Jason left to marry a princess named Creusa (Glauce), Medea sent his new bride a golden crown covered in poison, killing her in one last act of bitterness.
3. Hestia and her trusty audience take a step back from this next guest, who is furious with his mother, demanding justice for her unfaithfulness to, and murder of, his father, Agamemnon. "Aside from trying to sacrifice my sister Iphigenia," this man says, "he was a good dad." What is the name of this vengeful son?

Answer: Orestes

Upon arriving home from the Trojan war, Agamemnon, commander of the Greek army, was killed by his wife Clytemnestra and her lover, Aegisthus. The couple knew that Orestes would avenge his father, and so planned to kill him, too. However, Orestes was sent away by his sister, Electra. In his adulthood, Orestes did get his revenge, killing Clytemnestra and Aegisthus.
4. "I was once beautiful," cried this next guest on 'The Hestia Springer Show'. The crowd shout out in disgust as most cannot even look this woman in the eye. Hestia, ever the objective host, explains that this woman is, in fact, the victim, having been turned into a monster after being harassed by a certain sea god and then being transfigured. What is the name of this guest?

Answer: Medusa

Medusa, according to Ovid, was once a beautiful woman. Her beauty was such that Poseidon, god of the sea, found her irresistible and made unwelcome sexual advances towards her. This occurred in the temple of Athena, who blamed Medusa, transforming her into a dead-eyed, snake-haired creature.
5. "Siblings who will not share" is the title of this segment of the show, and Hestia has her hands full with a pair of brothers who are continuously squabbling. "Eteocles, my brother, just won't give me what is rightly mine," whines this next guest. "Since he won't share, me and my six mates have decided we're 'against Thebes' and I'm going to take what I deserve!". What is the name of this disgruntled brother?

Answer: Polynices

After the death of their father, Oedipus, Eteocles and Polynices agreed to share the rule of Thebes, each taking the kingship for a year. Once Eteocles' year was up, he refused to hand over the crown, and this led to a quarrel which eventually grew into a greater conflict known as the 'Seven Against Thebes'. Polynices allied with Capaneus, Tydeus, Hippomedon, Eteoclus (not Eteocles), Amphiaraus and Parthenopeus to try and conquer Thebes - a conflict which led to the warring brothers dying at each other's hands.
6. Hestia has often dealt with "It's Me or Her" situations on her show, but she is now dealing with the fallout of a decision already made by her next guest, Paris, who had to award one goddess with a golden apple ascribed to "the fairest". Which trouble-stirring goddess dropped this golden apple?

Answer: Eris

Eris (also known as Discord) was bitter, as she was not invited to attend the wedding of Peleus and Thetis (parents of Achilles). In retaliation, she threw an apple amongst the wedding guests which was addressed to "the fairest". Being claimed by Hera, Aphrodite and Athena, it was up to Paris, a handsome youth, to make the decision.

The decision (he eventually chose Aphrodite) led to the Trojan war.
7. "A Woman Divided" sums up this next guest, who seems incapable of suppressing the hate she has for her own son, Meleager, who killed her brother. "I cannot believe he chose that harlot instead of his own family!" shouts the woman who holds a brand above a lit match. This action is met with gasps from the ever-responsive audience. What is the name of this woman?

Answer: Althaea

The significance of the brand was that, at the time of Meleager's birth, his parents were told that he would live for as long as the brand was not consumed by fire. When he killed his uncle after a quarrel concerning Atalanta (with whom Meleager was in love), the brand was thrown into a fire by Althaea, killing her son.
8. Next up on 'The Hestia Springer Show', an angry Pirithous tells of how a group of drunkards ruined what was meant to be the happiest day of his life. As Hippodamia, his bride, weeps, Hestia declares "let's meet them!" as the group responsible for ruining this couple's big day enter the studio. What type of creatures do we expect to see?

Answer: Centaurs

The centaurs are generally painted as uncultured and brutish creatures in Classical mythology (a notable exception being Chiron, tutor to many great heroes). The centaurs at the wedding of Pirithous and Hippodamia became intoxicated and began to fight with the other guests.
9. "Aww" chimes the crowd in synchronicity as Hestia's next guest enters the stage. "Everyone thinks I'm a baby, just because I'm the youngest of 50 sons. All I wanted to do was fight in the Trojan war!" What is the name of this character from Greek mythology?

Answer: Polydorus

As the youngest of Priam's 50 sons, Polydorus was not allowed to enter battle like his heroic brother, Hector. Instead, he was sent to live with Polymestor for his own safety, but Polymestor eventually killed Polydorus for his riches.
There are many different accounts of how and why Polydorus was killed.
10. Hestia has left the most dysfunctional family til last, as her final guest enters. "Ready for a new start with my new wife, Phaedra, how was I to know that she would fall in love with my own son!" cries this man who is otherwise known for his heroic adventures on Crete. Who is Hestia's final guest?

Answer: Theseus

After a fleeting relationship with Ariadne (who helped him defeat the Minotaur), Theseus married Antiope (an Amazon), who bore him a child called Hippolytus. Phaedra, Theseus' second wife, fell in love with Hippolytus, but turned Theseus against his son after she was rejected. Hippolytus was killed by Theseus, but was later revived by Aesclepius, god of medicine.
