Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This man was called Lorindol, or "Goldenhead", by the Eldar.

Answer: Hador

Nicknamed so because of his fair hair, he was the head of the House of Hador, one of the Three Houses of Edain that swore fealty to Fingolfin and settled in Dor-Lomin. Both Hador and his son Gundor fell in Dagor Bragollach, defending Eithel Sirion on the borders of his lord's land of Mithrim from Morgoth's assault.
2. History also calls him "the mightiest of Mortal Men", but he was better known as "The Steadfast".

Answer: Hurin

Hurin Thalion ("The Steadfast") got his nickname in honor of his last stand in Fen of Serech at the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, where he sacrificed the last of the House of Hador to cover High King Turgon's retreat towards Gondolin. Turin was his son. Beor was the head of the First House of Edain, while the famous Beren was, of course, his descendant.
3. Known as "The Old", he was the first Man to swear allegiance to an Elven King.

Answer: Beor

Finrod Felagund, the Friend of Men, was the first to meet his tribe as they crossed Ered Luin and they became friends for life. It is said that when Beor grew old and died, the Eldar were struck for the first time by the strange gift of Iluvatar to Men. Baran and Bregolas were the descendants of Beor, while Marach belonged to the House of Hador.
4. "The Blessed" was one of the names he was known by.

Answer: Earendil

Also "The Mariner", Earendil was the son of Tuor and Idril and inherited his father's love for the sea. Earendil the Blessed he is named in the Elvish stories of his daring voyage that brought deliverance from Morgoth's dominion to the peoples of Middle-earth. Perhaps the name also refers to the fact that Elbereth blessed his ship before lifting it up into heavens, which he sails with a Silmaril on his brow.
5. He was dubbed "The Unhappy" due to the circumstances surrounding his death.

Answer: Gorlim

Gorlim the Unhappy was captured and tricked by Sauron, and ended up betraying his lord Barahir and his men to Sauron's spies. But it is his sorrow rather than treason that remained in memory, for what he did was out of love to his wife Eilinel who he thought alive and in Sauron's power.

The others mentioned also died unhappily, if with more honor - Turin fell on his sword, Maedhros (an Elf!) threw himself into a chasm, and Huor was killed with an arrow through the eye.
6. The Eldar did not call him "The Accursed" for nothing!

Answer: Uldor

Son of Ulfang the Black, Uldor the Accursed was the chieftain of the Easterlings and the prime mover of the great betrayal that estranged Men and Elves forever. At the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, which the Eldar perhaps could have won had all their allies remained loyal, he led his forces that swore fealty to Maedhros the Tall against his lord's flank and rear. That ruined the eastern army of the Eldar and doomed the whole battle; after this loss, never again would they have the strength to oppose Morgoth openly. Ulwart and Ulfast were his brothers.
7. One of his names was "The Blood-Spattered".

Answer: Turin

The holder of many names - Turambar, Mormegil etc., Turin names himself "Agarwaen, son of Umartha" when he arrives in Nargothrond. The blood on his hands is that of his friend Beleg, and Umartha ("Doomed") refers to his father Hurin under a black curse from Morgoth.
8. Mighty among the Edain, his nickname was "The One-Handed".

Answer: Beren

Beren Erchamion lost his hand to Carcharoth, the Werewolf of Angband, the hand still clutching the Silmaril that he recovered from Morgoth. Dior Eluchil was his son, Thingol's Heir, and Barahir was his father.
9. "But still there lived in hiding cold, Undaunted, ______ the Bold..."

Answer: Barahir

Barahir the Bold and his band of outlaws that included his son Beren was the father of partisan tactics in Beleriand and had successfully challenged Morgoth's power over his native Dorthonion until Gorlim's betrayal. His deeds were overshadowed by those of his more famous son. Felagund is the nickname of Finrod.
10. The women of Edain were famous in these tales. This great lady was known as "Elfsheen".

Answer: Morwen

Morwen Eledhwen, the Lady of Dor-lomin, was the wife of Hurin and mother of Turin and Niniel Nienor. It is said that even after Morgoth's triumph and her husband's death the Easterlings dared not despoil her house or chase her from Dor-lomin. Her tragic life ended at Cabed Naeramarth, as did that of her children.

The island above the waves with the stone marking their grave is named Tol Morwen after her. Elwing followed Earendil into the West, Luthien (an Elf!) accepted the Gift of Men and died with Beren, while Rian was the mother of Tuor who, after giving birth to him, lay down at the grave of her husband and died.
