Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To begin at the beginning: what is the best English translation for the Inferno's first line, "Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita"?

Answer: "Halfway on the path of our life"

Dante's Italian poetry was not only written during the Middle Ages but also while the poet was middle-aged. It's still relished for the beauty of its language to this day.
2. Which ancient Roman poet serves as Dante's guide through the infernal regions?

Answer: Virgil

Virgil had written about the infernal Cimmerian regions centuries before, and so Dante must have thought him the most fitting guide for such a poetic journey as this one.
3. How many circles of hell does Dante pass through?

Answer: nine

According to Dante, hell contains nine regions, eight devoted to different sins, and one dedicated to housing non-Christians who nevertheless led good lives.
4. Which philosophers does Dante encounter in Limbo, the first circle of hell?

Answer: Socrates and Plato

"There I beheld both Socrates and Plato,
Who nearer him before the others stand;"

Dante has a long philosophical talk in a castle with his favorite ancient Greek philosophers.
5. Name the two lustful adulterers whom Dante meets in the second circle of hell.

Answer: Paolo and Francesca

The adulterous spirits of Paolo and Francesca remain eternally storm-tossed in the winds of hell. How romantic.
6. At the beginning of which century does the poem begin?

Answer: fourteenth

To be precise, Canto 1 begins in the year 1300 on Good Friday.
7. What is the Italian term for the ten "evil pockets" in which Dante sees the fraudulent suffering on entering the eighth circle of hell?

Answer: bolgie

Plural bolgie, singular bolgia, these pockets house some of the worst criminals in pre-modern history, including a pope, Odysseus, and Jason of Golden Fleece fame. Dante was a pretty stringent Christian.
8. The ninth and lowest circle of hell Dante reserves for what kind of sinners?

Answer: the treasonous

According to Dante, treason was the worst type of sin, and treason against God, of which Satan was guilty, the worst possible sin.
9. Now for the big guy himself. What is Satan's punishment for disobeying God?

Answer: he stands buried to his waist in freezing ice

Satan remains trapped in the frozen lake while chewing on Brutus, Cassius, and Judas Iscariot. This seems especially hard of Brutus, who by most accounts was one of the noblest of the ancient Romans and had serious reservations about murdering Caesar.
10. After climbing down Satan's shaggy legs, Dante and his guide emerge into what new area?

Answer: Purgatorio

Dante and Virgil continue their journey in the second book of the Divine Comedy trilogy, which looks at sinners being cleansed of their wrongdoings on the way to heaven.
