Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the book begins, which palace is Grace at?

Answer: Greenwich

The book starts out in Greenwich, but Grace is at sea on the Judith during most of the story, really.
2. What is the name of Lady Sarah's tiring woman?

Answer: Olwen

Captain Derby captures Olwen and says he will do horrible things to her if Lady Sarah doesn't come with him.
3. What color of wool does the Queen wear when she and her retinue go to Tilbury?

Answer: Black

The Queen, being sensible, wears black wool. When the courtiers wearing silk and damask see it, they begin to look worried because they start to think that their fine clothes will get splashed.
4. When Hawkins, Drake, and Derby are telling the Queen what kind of ship they want to build, the Queen says that she can't understand "Sailorish," though she can speak three other languages (besides English). What are they?

Answer: French, Italian, and Latin

The Queen doesn't understand what the captains are talking about when they are talking about the mainmast and things, so she asks them to explain in a simpler way.
5. When Lady Sarah is in shock from falling into the water at Tilbury, Mrs. Champernowne decides to give her a hot toddy of aqua vitae, honey, citron, and water, with a good sprinkling of what two spices?

Answer: Nutmeg and cinnamon

Mrs. Champernowne is fluttering and fussing over Lady Sarah, and Captain Drake agrees with her that the horrible-sounding concoction would do Sarah good.
6. Grace and Mary Shelton made a bet of who (either Lady Sarah or her enemy, Lady Jane) would slap each other first. Who won the sixpence?

Answer: Neither of them

Grace and Mary argued for a bit over who would get the sixpence, but since Lady Jane didn't actually *slap* Lady Sarah (she actually pushed her), they decided that neither of them had won.
7. Grace complains in her daybooke that her and the other Maids of Honor are probably wanted in the Presence Chamber while the Queen talks to ambassadors. What nationality does Grace say the ambassadors are?

Answer: Scottish

Grace hates to sit in the Presence Chamber on cushions all day, and even though she likes to embroider, she can think of much more useful things to do than that. I can't really blame her!
8. What sickness does Ellie get?

Answer: Quinsy

Grace first thinks Ellie is really sick when Ellie says she's not hungry, and it turns out that she got the quinsy from being worked too hard in the laundry.
9. Grace discovers that the letter from Lady Sarah to the Queen is forgery. What letter confirms this to her?

Answer: The Y's

At first, Grace thinks the letter really is from Lady Sarah, but when she looks closer, she can see that it's not, because Lady Sarah always puts big, curling tails on her Y's, and there were none on that letter.
10. When Grace disguises herself as a boy, what does she choose as a name?

Answer: Gregory

When Masou asks Grace what she's going to be called, she says, "Um, Gregory? That sounds a bit like Grace."
11. On Drake's ship, the Cook tells Grace and Masou to eat squatting between two barrels filled with what?

Answer: Beer

The space between the beer barrels is where Grace and Masou eat and sleep while on the ship.
12. Grace writes that Masou is snoring in two ways. What are they?

Answer: Gently and annoyingly

Grace, used to her soft bed in her chamber, can't sleep the first night on the ship. Masou, however, falls asleep instantly, and his snoring annoys Grace terribly.
13. What is the name of the sullen-looking boy who fights with Grace, and also helps the cats so that they won't be drowned?

Answer: Tom Webster

Tom, who is big and always looks sullen, is really softhearted, and he takes care of the ship's cat and her kittens when the other sailors want to drown them.
14. When Grace has to climb the ratlines and then hook her toes on the toe-rope, what does she pretend the rope is, so it will seem less scary?

Answer: A cherry tree

Grace pretends that the toe-rope is a cherry tree, and imagines she's just trying to get some cherries that are in a hard place to reach, which helps her stay a bit calmer.
15. What is Derby's ship named?

Answer: The Silver Arrow

I don't know if the Silver Arrow ever existed, or was only from Patricia Finney's imagination. Lady Sarah was on the Silver Arrow when she was held captive by Derby.
16. What is Drake's ship (in this book) named?

Answer: The Judith

The Judith weighed 50 tons, and Drake was made captain of when he was 24. The Judith is the ship that Grace and Masou were on for the sea battle and the rescue of Lady Sarah.
17. In the sea battle against the Spanish ship, Grace's weapon is a bow and arrows, but what does Masou fight with?

Answer: Fire pots

While Grace shoots the other ship's sails with burning arrows, Masou throws "fire pots" at it, so the whole vessel starts burning.
18. What almost hits Grace in the battle?

Answer: A musket ball

Before the musket ball almost hits her, Grace doesn't really realize that people are actually trying to kill her, though almost being shot wakes her up a bit.
19. When Grace is pretending to be a page and is attending "her mistress," why does she sigh?

Answer: All the sweets are being eaten

After that, Grace is glad to be of higher rank than a real page, because then *she* can be the one to eat all the sweets if she wants, not the one sighing because she doesn't get any.
20. What does Grace wonder at the very end of the book?

Answer: If she really fought in the sea battle

Grace ends her daybooke by wondering if she really fought in the sea battle. And of course, she really did.
