1. What is the name of the fictional town in which the orphanage, where Homer spent his childhood, is situated?

Answer: St. Cloud's

2. Dr. Larch keeps a journal. How does he begin a number of his entries?

Answer: In other parts of the world...

The other even more common start to an entry is "Here in St. Cloud's...".
3. When Homer leaves the orphanage, he has broken a promise to someone. Who?

Answer: Melony

Melony is one of the strongest characters in any of Irving's books, but only had a brief appearance in the movie. Her character is completely different and the part is very tiny. Jessica Leigh Stern is credited as "Orphan girl on staircase in opening scene (Melony)".
4. What did Dr. Larch require of Homer if he was to stay at the orphanage?

Answer: He be of use

Homer certainly learns to be of use. Eventually, he learns obstetrical procedure from Dr. Larch. He actually administers to pregnant women and even delivers babies. To Dr. Larch's dismay, Homer doesn't want to perform abortions!
5. Which of the orphans had to be kept on a breathing machine and died as a child due to breathing problems?

Answer: Fuzzy Stone

6. Why did Candy and Wally come to the orphanage?

Answer: To get an abortion

Obviously, this was for Candy. Homer's meeting with this beautiful, young couple was his ticket out of the orphanage (at least temporarily).
7. Which orphan was deeply disappointed that Candy and Wally didn't adopt him?

Answer: Curly Day

Curly, desperate to be adopted, was enamored with the beauty of Candy (as was Homer).
8. Which novel by Charles Dickens did Homer read to the other orphans at bedtime?

Answer: David Copperfield

Irving always mentions Dickens as a huge influence on his writing.
9. What could the migrant pickers see from the roof of the cider house that Mr. Rose didn't want Homer to explain to them?

Answer: Ferris Wheel

Mr. Rose felt the migrant workers had no need to know about Ferris Wheels. For one thing, when Homer brings Mr. Rose to the carnival, Mr. Rose is forced to defend himself in a knife fight becuase he is a black man. Fortunately, Dr. Larch is very handy with a knife.
10. Who is the father of Rose Rose's baby?

Answer: Mr. Rose

Mr. Rose uses his knife wielding skills to keep his workers in line. His daughter also is skilled with a knife as we find out in the book!
