Answer: In an aeroplane

The 'plane is travelling from Paris to Croydon, a flight one passanger will never complete.
2. What does Hercule Poirot confess his two phobias to be?

Answer: Flying and dentists' chairs

It is therefore rather disturbing for the great detective to travel in an aeroplane where one of the passengers is a dentist.
3. What is Jane Grey's profession?

Answer: Hairdresser's assistant

By the end of the book, Jane has been sacked, but to begin with she is indeed a hairdresser's assistant, and, knowing her social status, feels almost guilty that she is travelling first class.
4. Who pretended to blackmail the Countess of Horbury?

Answer: Norman Gale

At the request of Hercule Poirot, Norman Gale donned a disguise and proceeded to pretend to blackmail the drug-addicted and adulterous countess. It is in this chapter that the murderer makes his or her only mistake.
5. How many murders occur in the book?

Answer: Two

The first is the killing of Madame Giselle, and the second is the killing of Anne Roberts. The latter's murderer was made to look like suicide.
6. When Poirot tells the murderer his or her fingerprints were found on an incriminating bottle of poison, what does the culprit begin to say?

Answer: "That's impossible, I was wearing gloves!"

This is quite possibly the funniest line in the book, and has thankfully been included in both dramatisations of the novel to date (as of 2004).
7. Who is making a novel of the unpleasant scenario?

Answer: Daniel Clancy

The highly eccentric Mr. Clancy is making a murder mystery of the events he experienced, although the case remains unsolved. In his solution, he plans to propound a ridiculous (he calls it "clever") solution, involving the assassin hiding behind a seat and waiting for the kill.
8. Why did Madame Giselle lose contact with her daughter?

Answer: Her daughter was illegitimate

Anne Morrisso, who later became Mrs. Roberts, and later still the Countess's maid, was born of an unknown father. All we, the readers, know is that he was not Madame Giselle's husband. Anne was brought up and educated in Canada, and nurtured a growing dislike for her mother, which ultimately resulted in her conspiracy with the murderer.
9. Norman Gale's business does badly after the murder, but who becomes more popular with the customers?

Answer: Jane Grey

Jane Grey tells Mr. Gale over dinner in a restaurant that people find it "rather thrilling to have their hair done by someone who might be a murderess".
10. What was the only known erroneous detail, a mistake on Agatha Christie's part?

Answer: The length of the blowpipe

Years after "Death in the Clouds", the author took her unsubtle revenge against a woman who wrote to her, kindly pointing out that a blowpipe was much longer than Christie imagined, by mentioning the incident unfavourably in her novel "Mrs. McGinty's Dead", through another character. Thank you, and I hope you enjoyed playing this quiz as much as I enjoyed making it.
