Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which was the very first English translation of the New Testament from the Latin Vulgate?

Answer: Wycliffe's Bible

John Wycliffe, an Oxford teacher, and his followers the "Poor Preachers" translated the Bible into rigid English from the Latin Vulgate. Because of his reformed ideas he was condemned after his death and his bones were dug up from the grave and burned.
2. Who was the man who translated the first English New Testament in 1526 from the Greek, not Latin, and died for his ardor for God's Word?

Answer: William Tyndale

Tyndale escaped to Germany to have freedom to translate the Bible into English. He was the first to translate the Bible from the Greek, not Latin into English. He was burned at the stake in 1534.
3. Which Bible was translated between 1568 and 1609 by a group of Anglican bishops, and was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth?

Answer: The Bishops Bible

The Bishops Bible was translated because Anglican bishops disliked both the Matthew's Bible and Geneva Bible for their study notes. It was disliked by laymen and never achieved the popularity that the Geneva Bible did.
4. Which man was the first editor/translator to bring together a complete English Bible in 1535?

Answer: Miles Coverdale

Miles Coverdale was not a Greek scholar or Hebraist, so he translated from Latin and edited other existing translations for his Bible. His Bible is known for its linguistic flow and smooth vernacular, while the more accurate Tyndale was more rigid in his readings.
5. Which Bible was "authorized to read in churches" by King Henry the 8th, and was chained to the pulpits to prevent it from being stolen?

Answer: The Great Bible

The Great Bible was translated by Miles Coverdale in response to the Matthew's Bible's (1537) rivalry with his earlier translation (1535). It was massive and had a metal binding. Laymen could read from it in church, but had to follow a set of guidelines posted.
6. Which Bible had the New Testament translated by John Calvin's brother-in-law William Whittingham?

Answer: The Geneva Bible

This Bible was translated in Geneva, Germany by English reformers who fled the tyranny of Bloody Mary. It was popular with the laity, but the clergy disliked it because of the theological bias in its marginal notes.
7. Which Bible translation was favored by the Puritans, but not King James?

Answer: The Geneva Bible

The Puritans were Calvinistic in their theology. Because of King James' dislike of the notes in the Geneva Bible, among other issues, the Puritans went to America and became the Pilgrims.
8. Which Bible contained study notes which were saturated by Calvinistic doctrine?

Answer: The Geneva Bible

The Geneva church was heavily influenced by Calvinists, such as Theodore Beza and John Calvin himself.
9. King Henry the Eighth condemned Tyndale to burn at the stake because of his translation of the Bible, but shortly afterwards he unknowingly authorized a Bible which was simply a revision of Tyndale's translation. What was the name of this Bible?

Answer: The Matthew's Bible

John Rogers, under the false name of Thomas Matthew, edited Tyndale's New Testament and portions of the Old Testament, also adding material from Coverdale's work, to form the Matthew's Bible. This was, ironically, authorized by King Henry, who had killed Tyndale only a couple years later. John Rogers was a friend of Tyndale.
10. Which of these Bibles was a translation of the Old and New Testaments into English, not a revision of a previous English text?

Answer: All of these

Matthew Bible, Great Bible, as well as the King James Version were all commissioned to be translations of the Testaments into English. The authors drew upon the Hebrew, Greek, and Vulgate versions primarily. The greatest contribution to the English Bible was William Tyndale.
