Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. J. K. Rowling continued the "Harry Potter" story with two original works in 2016, the first being the screenplay of "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" and the latter being which of these, released as a stage play?

Answer: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

While Rowling solidified plans for a several-part movie series based on the world of "Harry Potter" by writing the original screenplay for "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", she continued the canon with "The Cursed Child" alongside scriptwriter Jack Thorne and theatre director John Tiffany, creating an original work set nineteen years after the bulk of "The Deathly Hallows" following not only Harry, Ron, and Hermione, but their children as well.

The combined release of both parts of the play caused "The Cursed Child" to be one of the bestselling book releases of 2016.
2. While the seven books in what can be regarded as Stephen King's magnum opus, "The Dark Tower", could stand on their own merit, King released which eighth book in the series (actually the fifth, chronologically) in 2012?

Answer: The Wind Through the Keyhole

Leading into the 2010s, King fed fans with two different books that followed up on classics he'd written in decades past, the first being the follow-up to "The Shining" (entitled "Doctor Sleep") and the second being "The Wind Through the Keyhole", bridging a short gap between "The Wizard and Glass" and "Wolves of the Calla", books four and five respectively.

While the book isn't required reading to understand the full story of "The Dark Tower", it does provide more material in which Roland Deschain and his ka-tet travel across the land to find their goal. Most of the book actually follows Roland's past, and the story of The Skin-Man. Further supplementary reading for "The Dark Tower" can be found in "The Little Sisters of Eluria", a prequel short story found in the "Everything's Eventual" collection.
3. While Margaret Atwood's 1993 novel "The Robber Bride" wasn't her most famous, she followed the story with which of these short fiction pieces, later compiled in her 2014 collection "Stone Mattress"?

Answer: I Dream of Zenia with the Bright Red Teeth

Atwood's novel, "The Robber Bride", follows the three women affected by a fourth woman named Zenia who was responsible for breaking them apart from their significant others while also drawing them into one another as acquaintances. As they got to know each other through their regular get-togethers, they discovered that none of them really knew the truth about the mysterious figure in their lives. Atwood, regarding Zenia as one of her mot personal characters, continued her story in "I Dream of Zenia with the Bright Red Teeth" which, although it appeared in 'The Walrus' in the mid-2010s, later became one of the short stories in "Stone Mattress", her tenth collection.
4. Charlaine Harris ended the 'Southern Vampire Mysteries' with "Dead Ever After', but later provided an official afterwords in which subsequent release six months later?

Answer: After Dead

"After Dead: What Came Next in the World of Sookie Stackhouse" hit the store shelves six months after the thirteenth book in the series, "Dead Ever After", in 2013 while the television adaptation of her works continued into 2014. While book thirteen wrapped up a number of storylines, fans still flocked to the stores for "After Dead", partly because it contained a thorough encyclopedia of characters found throughout the 'Southern Vampire Mysteries' series and partly because it wrapped up the final loose ends, a bit of a necessity after fans were a bit vocal about the lacklustre ending in "Dead Ever After". Harris would later move on to a new series, "Midnight, Texas".
5. The "Twilight" series ended, but that never stopped Stephenie Meyer from rereleasing the first book in the series, altering the characters and giving it which new title for its tenth anniversary?

Answer: Life and Death

While Meyer released a few additional reading materials for fans of this critically-panned vampire series (including the unfinished "Midnight Sun" and "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner") none were quite as interesting as "Life and Death", released in 2015 as a novel set in a parallel universe in which the roles of Bella, Edward, and Jacob have been gender-swapped (forming Beau, Edythe, and Julie). Packaged back-to-back with the original "Twilight" novel, Meyer saw it as a way to break down the gender construction of the original story, and due to the revised ending, it was clear she didn't want to pursue changes on her later books.
6. What book with a one-word title and written by E. L. James was also known as '"Fifty Shades of Grey" as Told by Christian'?

Answer: Grey

After the "Fifty Shades" trilogy made big bucks in the early 2010s and sparked a major interest in erotic fiction, it seemed as though E. L. James would ride the three books to a multi-million dollar lifestyle. She sold the movie rights to her bestsellers, but also gave the fans what they wanted-- more content.

But instead of continuing the series she rewrote the original "Fifty Shades of Grey" novel, this time taking on the point of view of her enigmatic male lead, Christian Grey, and giving context for his actions in the original book. Unsurprisingly, the book was criticized for being poorly written, but it sold more than a million copies in its week of release.
7. James Dashner's "Maze Runner" series seemed to be conclusively finished with "The Death Cure" in 2011, but he instead continued to release prequels to build the dystopian world he envisioned. One was "The Kill Order". What was the other?

Answer: The Fever Code

By the end of 2016, "The Maze Runner", Dashner's most popular series due to its status as a bestseller and its movie adaptations, had five books in it. Although the series ended definitively by the end of "The Death Cure", "The Kill Order" and "The Fever Code" filled in gaps before the evens of "The Maze Runner", allowing readers to learn more about Thomas and the Gladers before they lost their memories and broke free to embark on their harrowing adventures. Believe it or not, further recommended reading was released in an e-book format; "The Maze Runner Files" added even more flavour text to the series.
8. Veronica Roth released "Divergent", "Insurgent", and "Allegiant" as part of a trilogy, but what was the name of the short story collection compiled a year later, continuing the series with five more tales from the universe?

Answer: Four

While Roth's bestselling trilogy came to an end with "Allegiant", five different online releases, some of which were penned after the release of the concluding chapter to the series, ended up getting released en masse as "Four: The Divergent Collection" in 2014.

Much like "Midnight Sun" for Stephenie Meyer, "Four" was written from the perspective of another character experiencing events leading up to and involving the author's first novel (in this case, "Divergent"). Unsurprisingly, the book was a popular sell for young adults though unlike many other young adult series in the 2010s, the film adaptations were marred with some difficulties, especially going into the later movies.
9. Which David Mitchell ghost story revisits a character seen in his novel "The Bone Clocks"?

Answer: Slade House

While Mitchell, best known for writing "Cloud Atlas", released the dense fantasy novel "The Bone Clocks" in 2014, many of the interconnected narratives seemed truncated enough for him to justify incorporating one character, Doctor Iris Marinus-Fenby, into the climax of "Slade House", a shorter novel with many similar characteristics, particularly the use of multiple, sequential narrators and a preoccupation with immortality.

While the general narrative of the books differ greatly, this extra cameo and the unexpected shortness of "Slade House" make it an interesting easter egg for anyone familiar with his otherwise complex works. Fenby also appeared in "The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet".
10. Children's author Lemony Snicket wrote what four-part mystery series as a prequel to "A Series of Unfortunate Events"?

Answer: All the Wrong Questions

Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket) continued his thirteen book "Series of Unfortunate Events", following the moribund occurrences in the lives of the fictional Baudelaire orphans with a couple of supplementary works ("Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography" and "The Beatrice Letters"), but none were as thorough as an entire companion series, "All the Wrong Questions", which followed Snicket's mysterious past in the V.F.D., featured heavily in the original series.

The four books in this prequel series included "Who Could That Be at This Hour?", "When Did You See Her Last?", "Shouldn't You Be in School?", and "Why Is This Night Different From All Other Nights?"
