Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Katsa killed someone - accidentally - for the first time when she was just eight years old. How did she kill him?

Answer: She hit him in the face.

The man was some sort of distant cousin, to whom Katsa took an immediate dislike when she saw the creepy way he interacted with girls. Eventually the man began to pay unwelcome attention to Katsa. She tried to leave, but instead of letting her, the man reached out a hand to grab her leg. Feeling threatened, Katsa hit him in the face, only the blow was so strong that it shoved the bones of his nose into his brain, and he died on the spot.

It was at this point that the nature of Katsa's Grace was first revealed.
2. Okay, let's go for something more lighthearted. In Chapter Six, Katsa finds that her cousin Raffin's hair is now blue. How did this happen?

Answer: He was testing a rub-on headache cure, and it ended up staining his hair blue.

Raffin tells Katsa that the day before, he had thought he'd felt a headache coming on, so he tried the remedy. However, apparently the cure turns fair hair blue! Katsa asks him if it cured the headache, to which Raffin replies, "Well, if I had a headache, then it did, but I'm not convinced I had one to begin with." Her cousin then tries to convince Katsa to try it herself, since her hair is darker and would presumably turn less intensely blue, but she declines on the ground that she never has headaches - a fact which later turns out to be significant.
3. In Part One, during one of Katsa's "errands" for King Randa, she comes across a young, Graced mind reader. What color were the eyes of this young girl?

Answer: Squash yellow and mud brown

The girl was the daughter of the man Katsa had been ordered to torture. His crime had been the theft of three more acres of wood from King Randa's forests than he paid for. Katsa originally intends to follow her orders as usual, but finds at the last minute that she cannot make herself torture him. She knocks him out instead, and leaves.
4. What is Greening Grandemalion's more commonly used name?

Answer: Po

Po's real name is Greening Grandemalion. Unsurprisingly, he does not go by this (rather absurd) handle. Instead, he goes by his brothers' nickname for him, born of his silver and gold eyes. In Lienid, his home country, there is a tree whose leaves turn silver and gold in autumn. It is called the Po Tree. Po remarks to Katsa that it was probably an inevitable nickname.
5. At the end of Part One, it is revealed that Po can sense people's thoughts (when they are thinking of him). What does Katsa suggest he do, in the beginning of Part Two, to make her more comfortable being around him?

Answer: Tell her everything he thinks about her, as he thinks it.

Po is not too crazy about this suggestion, but he does have to admit that on principle it would be fair. He agrees, and immediately launches into a vast paragraph of observations and speculations, including wondering why she turned down Giddon's marriage proposal and his worries about how roughly she handles her horse.
6. Po is also able to tell when people are lying to him. At one point during Part Two, Katsa and Po are questioning a group of men about the kidnapping of Po's grandfather. One of the men says that King Leck of Monsea is not responsible for the kidnapping, which Po detects as a lie. What does this man also say, believing his own words fully, that confounds Po?

Answer: "King Leck is blameless".

Po says that he sensed that the men know that Leck is guilty, yet at the same time honestly believe him innocent. Later on, when Katsa and Po are discussing the incident further, we are reminded that King Leck has only one eye - which, if he was Graced, would keep him from being identified as such (all Gracelings have eyes of two different colors.) It occurs to Po that Leck might be Graced, and his Grace could be that of forcing people to believe him no matter what he said.

A creepy idea!
7. Seabane is a flower, the leaves of which prevent pregnancy when ingested by a woman. What color are the flowers?

Answer: purple

Katsa makes it very clear throughout the book that she never desires to have children. She tells Po that she wonders if Giddon (supposing she had accepted his marriage proposal) would have thought her "charmingly domestic" when he saw her planting seabane in their garden, or whether he would have known what it meant.
8. In Part Two, Katsa is attacked by a wild animal. What kind of animal was it?

Answer: A mountain lion.

Thanks to her Grace, she triumphs, but the wildcat does inflict numerous (non-fatal) injuries. Katsa thinks that, in spite of her injuries, she did well in her fight - she kills the mountain lion with only a dagger.
9. What is the name of Leck's daughter?

Answer: Bitterblue

In addition to being the twisted King Leck's daughter, Bitterblue is also Po's cousin. Her mother, Ashen, who ends up being murdered by Leck, is Po's aunt. Bitterblue is ten years old during the events of Graceling.
10. During the climax, Katsa is caught under the spell of Leck's words. What does he do that gives her enough clarity to kill him?

Answer: He begins to tell the truth of Po's Grace.

Katsa was able to kill Leck, not because she remembered the truth of Po's Grace herself, nor because she remembered that she needed to kill him, but "because she remembered that Po did have a secret, a terrible secret, the revelation of which would hurt him in some horrible way she felt deeply but couldn't quite remember". Po and his mother had pretended that his Grace was merely fighting, so that his father and brothers would not be tempted to use him as a tool.
