Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Buck is the protagonist of the book. He was a large dog who lived in Santa Clara Valley at a mansion. He was the best friend of the owner, Judge Miller. Buck's mother was a Scotch shepherd dog, but what breed of dog was Buck's father?

Answer: St. Bernard

Buck was a large St. Bernard/Scotch shepherd dog who lived at a mansion in Santa Clara Valley. He was based on a sled dog owned by Jack London's landlords, Marshall Latham Bond and his brother Louis Whitford Bond. In the book, it says he had the strength of his St. Bernard father Elmo, but the pride of his Scotch shepherd dog mother Shep.

The change of his personality, from a domesticated pet to a "primordial beast", is what the book focuses on.
2. This man, a gardener's assistant at the mansion, was the man who sold Buck. He sold him in order to pay off a gambling debt. Who is it?

Answer: Manuel

Manuel isn't in much of the book, but he plays a vital role. He was the man who sold Buck, for $100, to pay off a gambling debt of his. He liked to gamble, and he lost lots of money from it. The money he got from his job wasn't enough to pay for the things he needed, as he had a wife, yet he continued to gamble.

He betrayed the Judge and sold Buck to a man at a little flag station called College Park.
3. After Buck was sold, he was taken on a train to the "man in the red sweater". Here, Buck was "broken" by this man. To break him, the man repeatedly struck him with a weapon. What type of weapon did the man use?

Answer: Club

Before this Buck had already been teased and tormented. He decided that this man is his next tormentor and he charged at him. The man then struck Buck with a club while he was in the air. This sent a shock up Buck's body, but he didn't realise that it was the club that did the damage.

He charged again, and the same thing happened. He then realised it was the club, but he continually charged at the man anyway. The same things happened to him. Buck then decided that a man with a club is to be obeyed.
4. Soon, Buck was shipped off to Alaska with three other dogs. He was purchased by two men, one named François and the other Perrault. Two of the other dogs were Curly, a "good natured Newfoundland" and Dave, a dog who just wanted to be left alone, and got angry if he wasn't. What was the name of the other dog, who was Buck's biggest rival?

Answer: Spitz

Spitz was Buck's biggest rival and the leader of the sled dogs. That is, he was until Buck fought him to the death and triumphed. The dogs that François and Perrault got later where named Sol-lecks, whose name meant "the angry one", similar to Dave in character; Billee, a dog with an overly good nature; Joe, Billee's brother who was sour in nature; Dolly, who went mad while on the trail; Pike, who was sly in nature and taught Buck how to steal; and Dub, who got blamed for everything.
5. Buck arrived at Dyea beach in Alaska on a ship. At first he was very confused, he didn't even know what snow was. His first days were "like a nightmare" with "every hour filled with shock and surprise". Curly was killed in the first days of arrival. What was the name of the ship Buck sailed on, which shared the name of an ocean animal?

Answer: Narwhal

In the first days Buck was very confused and a bit upset. He had been taken from a life full of sunshine and happiness in to a miserable, hostile place. The animals there knew nothing of law other than the law of the wilderness, "the law of club and fang".

In fact, Curly was killed by a husky. She went up and sniffed it in a friendly way, but the husky got angry and attacked her. Nearby dogs crowded around in a circle, ready to finish off the loser, as was the way with wolves. Curly was no match for the husky and was killed. Spitz started laughing at the death, and this started the rivalry between Spitz and Buck.
6. Shortly after the death of Curly, Buck started his job as a sled dog. It was very hard for him at first, but he learnt quickly. He didn't know where to sleep at first, believing he was to sleep in the tent with François and Perrault, but he learnt soon that the dogs dug a deep hole in the snow and slept in there. Buck was placed between two dogs, second closest to the sled. Which dog was the wheeler, the dog that was placed behind Buck?

Answer: Dave

Dave was the wheeler, a hardworking dog who taught Buck how to be a sled dog by biting at Buck's hindquarters. Sol-lecks was added on Buck's first day as sled dog and was placed in front of Buck. Spitz was the leader.
7. Buck learnt extremely quickly and soon became the perfect sled dog. They were travelling to Dawson, and on the way numerous events happened. They were attacked by savage husky dogs, and all the dogs had to fight them. Many of them suffered great injuries, Joe losing an eye. Buck and his rival's rivalry grew, and the clash for leadership begun. They fought to the death, with Buck coming out victorious. But, to his surprise, François and Perrault decided to put another dog as the leader first. Buck wasn't happy, and stubbornly made his case as leader to the men. After a long time, they replaced this dog and put Buck in the leader's spot. He was a natural as leader. Which dog did they put in the leader's spot originally?

Answer: Sol-lecks

Spitz and Buck fought to the death, and it was a close fight. The nearby dogs circled the pair, as they did during the fight between Curly and the husky. Buck eventually won, and the husky dogs finished off Spitz. The men put Sol-lecks in the leader's spot after finding out what happened. Buck jumped at Sol-lecks angrily, and continued afterwards to be stubborn and disobedient. Eventually, the men put Buck in the leader's spot.
8. Eventually, Buck said goodbye to François and Perrault. They were sad to let him go. Buck and his companions were bought by a "Scotch half-breed" man. He made them work hard, and none of them liked it. Dave died under his leadership, and they all got absolutely exhausted. They were then bought by three amateurs who knew little of sled dogs. They overfed them, meaning they ran out of food for the dogs quickly. They also put way too many things in the sled, so much that the dogs couldn't even move it. It took numerous times of unpacking before finally it moved. There were two men, named Charles and Hal. There was also a woman, who was the wife of Charles and the sister of Hal. What was her name?

Answer: Mercedes

These people soon regretted ever deciding to take the journey, and they never stopped quarreling. Mercedes was at first overly nice to the dogs, not letting the men whip them and sneaking extra food to them. Later, however, she couldn't care less about the well-being of the dogs. They made almost no progress and the dogs soon became so tired they could hardly work.
9. The dogs soon started dying under the handling of Charles and Hal, going one by one. They came soon to a resting place, where Buck's future master John Thornton was staying. Thornton warned them not to keep going as the ice would crack and they would die, but they didn't listen. Buck refused to move, and this angered the men, who started whipping him and bashing him violently. John Thornton saved Buck, and the rest of the group took off, only for what Thornton warned to happen. Which dog was the first to die under their handling?

Answer: Dub

Dub was the first to go, after he was unable to keep pulling due to a shoulder injury and extreme exhaustion. The other dogs soon went, going one by one. But, after Charles, Hal and Mercedes didn't listen to John's advice, all the dogs and the men and woman died after the ice cracked underneath them. John Thornton managed to save Buck from the beatings of Charles and Hal, and he kept him as his pet. Buck soon made friends with Thornton's other dogs, Skeet and Nig.
10. Buck grew to absolutely love John Thornton. He became his inseparable companion. He even saved his life from river rapids. He also won a bet for John Thornton. He was at the pub, with the men around him bragging about how good their dogs were. Thornton bragged that Buck could carry a thousand pounds on a sled and walk with it for a hundred yards. A man put a thousand dollars against him that he couldn't, and Thornton took the bet. Buck did it, and Thornton and his companions went off in search of a legendary mining spot. But the call of the wild became irresistible to Buck, and sometimes he would go for days or weeks in a row living in the wild, hunting and living with wolves, but he always returned. Then one day, when he returned, he found Thornton, his companions and his dogs had been killed by a native tribe. What was the name of this tribe?

Answer: The Yeehat Tribe

The Yeehat tribe was a tribe Jack London made up, unlike the others listed, who are real Alaskan native tribes. When Buck found arrows in the dead bodies of those at the camp, he found the tribe who killed them nearby. Buck went mad and started murdering everyone he could in the tribe, human or dog.

The novel ends explaining that the Yeehats never entered that place again. Buck lived in the wild and became the leader of a wolf pack, and every winter night Buck went back to the spot of Thornton's death and let out a long, sorrowful howl.
