Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these breeds of dog did Buck NOT share his first home (Judge Miller's place) with?

Answer: Bulldog

"It was true, there were other dogs. There could not but be other dogs on so vast a place, but they did not count."
The pug's name was Toots and the Mexican hairless was called Ysabel.
2. Why did Manuel the gardener need money so badly that he stole and sold Buck?

Answer: For his gambling debts on the Chinese lottery.

"Manuel had one besetting sin. He loved to play Chinese lottery. Also, in his gambling, he had one besetting weakness - faith in a system, and this made his damnation certain."
Jack London himself had serious financial problems towards the end of his life, which drove him to drink heavily; he eventually died of kidney disease.
3. What was the nationality of Perrault, the man who bought Buck from "the man with the red sweater" and made him a sled dog?

Answer: French-Canadian

"'Sacredam!' he cried, when his eyes lit upon Buck. 'Dat one dam bully dog! Eh? How mooch?'"
Perrault and Francois, Buck's first sled drivers, are tough but fair and he grows to respect them well.
4. Spitz is the lead dog of the team, and takes great delight in antagonising Buck. What event leads to the fatal confrontation that ends their conflicts once and for all?

Answer: The whole team chase a snowshoe rabbit into the forest.

"...as [Buck] rounded the bend, the frost wraith of a rabbit still flitting before him, he saw another and larger frost wraith leap from the overhanging bank into the immediate path of the rabbit. It was Spitz."
Buck and Spitz fight to the death... Spitz's death. After that, Buck is made lead dog of the team.
5. What are the names of the obnoxious men and woman Buck has the misfortune to be sold to after Perrault and Francois can no longer keep him?

Answer: Charles, Hal and Mercedes.

"When driven with his mates to the new owners' camp, Buck saw a slipshod and slovenly affair, tent half stretched, dishes unwashed, everything in disorder; also, he saw a woman. 'Mercedes', the men called her. She was Charles' wife and Hal's sister - a nice family party."
These are the worst owners Buck encounters - their stubborn ignorance and disregard for their dogs end up costing them their lives, and almost Buck's as well.
6. What do the obnoxious and inexperienced owners buy to feed the dogs after they run out of dog food?

Answer: Frozen horse hides.

""A poor substitute for food was this hide, just as it had been stripped from the starved horses of the cattlemen six months back. In its frozen state it was more like strips of galvanized iron, and when a dog wrestled it into his stomach it thawed into thin and innutritious leathery strings and into a mass of short hair, irritating and indigestible."
7. What unpleasant end befalls the rest of the dog-team (all except Buck) and their foolhardy owners?

Answer: They fall through the ice while crossing a frozen river.

"They saw Charles turn and make one step to run back, and then a whole section of ice gave way and dogs and humans disappeared. A yawning hole was all that was to be seen. The bottom had dropped out of the trail."
Buck is saved from this fate by John Thorton, whose camp the doomed travellers pass through before setting out across the river. Thornton is enraged to see Hal mercilessly beating the exhausted dog, and fights with Hal until he lets him take Buck.
8. What are the names of Thornton's two other dogs?

Answer: Skeet and Nig.

"Unlike Skeet, who was wont to shove her nose under Thornton's hand and nudge and nudge till petted, or Nig, who would stalk up and rest his great head on Thornton's knee, Buck was content to adore at a distance."
Although he has held previous owners in respect and reverence, Thornton is the first human Buck truly loves. Buck will do absolutely anything for him.
9. How heavy was the sled which Buck successfully pulled one hundred yards for a bet that earned his master sixteen hundred dollars?

Answer: 1000 lbs

"His great chest was low to the ground, his head forward and down, while his feet were flying like mad, the claws scarring the hard-packed snow in parallel grooves. The sled swayed and trembled, half-started forward. One of his feet slipped, and one man groaned aloud. Then the sled lurched ahead in what appeared to be a succession of rapid jerks, though it never really came to a dead stop again..."
After Buck managed this feat (1000lbs is half a ton, remember!), many men offered to buy him for huge sums of money - but naturally Thornton refused.
10. After the death of John Thornton at the hands of the Yeehat Indians, what becomes of Buck?

Answer: He becomes the leader of a wolf pack.

"When the long winter nights come on and the wolves follow their meat into the lower valleys, he may be seen running at the head of the pack, through the pale moonlight or glimmering borealis, leaping gigantic above his fellows, his great throat a-bellow as he sings a song of the younger world, which is the song of the pack."
