Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Snowman's given name?

2. What is a rakunk?

Answer: an animal

A rakunk is a cross of a raccoon and a skunk. They were an early "create-an-animal" experiment that caught on as pets.
3. What colour eyes do the Crakers have?

Answer: Green

Crake liked green eyes.
4. Crake's given name is Glenn. Whom does Atwood imply he is named after?

Answer: Glenn Gould

Crake mentions that he is named after "some pianist."

"God's Gardeners" is a revolutionary group of environmentalists and animal activists.

Answer: HelthWyzer High

HelthWyzer High is the school for children of HelthWyzer employees.
7. What is a crake?

Answer: Thickney

A thickney is also an Australian bird. Snowman also uses this name at the end of the book while working with Crake at Paradice.
9. How did Oryx leave her family as a child?

She was later sold into kiddie porn. Crake and Jimmy saw her on an internet site and this seems to affect both of them quite a bit.

Answer: Harvesting organs

Pigoons carry several human genes, and are used to grow organs for transplants. Their organs can regenerate several times!
11. What is the name of the university Crake attends?

Answer: Watson-Crick

Named after the men who discovered the structure of DNA, Watson-Crick is where the most promising students attend.
12. What did Jimmy name his pet rakunk?

Answer: Killer

He had thought of calling it Bandit because of its raccoon mask, but he decided that name was too boring, especially after his mother suggested it.
13. In Junior High, Jimmy insults people by calling them a "Cork-nut." This is a term meaning almond, used by Alex, a talking animal. Alex is a real animal. What kind of animal is he?

Answer: a parrot

Trained by Dr. Irene Pepperberg, Alex can name about 50 objects, knows seven colours and can count to six. Experiments teaching non-human apes to speak have been unsuccessful, mainly due to their anatomical structure - they can't make and form sounds properly. However several great apes have learned sign language.
14. What are the Pleeblands?

Answer: Free Cities

The Pleeblands are reputed to be very rough places. Those who live in the Compounds are generally afraid of the Pleeblands, in part because of the possibility of violence, but also because of the freedom they experience there.
15. A disease brings about the collapse of civilization. How does this disease initially get released into the population?

Answer: in BlyssPlus pills

Crake created the disease and introduced it into the population through his pills, which were reputed to prolong youth, provide unlimited libido and protect against STDs. He spread the pills all over the world while on a "business trip."
16. Is Snowman the last "real" human being on Earth?

Answer: No

On a wind-up radio, Snowman picks up someone on shortwave, as well as someone on CB. The novel ends with Snowman fiding three people camped farther along the beach where the Crakers live.
17. What are caecotropes?

Answer: partially digested feces, reingested to get full nutrients from food

Crake wants the Crakers to be able to find food easily, so he creates them to eat leaves and other plant material. In order to allow them to survive on such a diet, he gives them the ability to eat their own feces. He got the idea from rabbits, who also eat caecotropes in order to allow them to fully digest the cellulose in their food. Snowman thinks the whole idea of eating caecotropes is disgusting.
18. What is the security force called?

Answer: CorpSeCorps

These guys are pretty tough. They not only police the compounds, but also act as a sort of secret police, keeping track of insurgents and other activists.
19. How does Jimmy's mother die?

Answer: executed for being a revolutionary

Although she's been on the lam for years, she is eventually tracked down and killed by firing squad. CorpSeCorps shows Jimmy the footage of her execution, while Crake sees the footage on the internet.

Answer: someone who is not a genius

This is what Watson-Crick students call practically everyone. Jimmy is introduced around the university as Crake's neurotypical cousin.
21. What do the Crakers bring Snowman once a week?

Answer: a cooked fish

Snowman tells the Crakers that Crake decreed them to do this for him, but of course this still leaves Snowman hungry. He wished he had told them to bring him three fish per day.
22. What do the Crakers believe Snowman uses to talk to Crake?

Answer: his watch

Snowman's watch is broken, having no arms. He wears it simply out of habit.
